Sailing to Byzantium Summary in English

Here we have uploaded the Sailing to Byzantium Summary in English for students. This will help students to learn quickly in English and Hindi language.

The speaker introduces readers to a world in which there is no place for the elderly. It's a world in which young lovers embrace under trees full of singing birds (which seem oblivious to their mortality), the water is a swarm of fish, and every living thing - whether it's a human, a fish, or a Bird - is born and then dies. Everything in that country is so entangled in this very moment that it cannot pay attention to the things that can survive more than the flesh.

An old man in this world is nothing but a thin, rough old scarecrow until he can keep his soul alive, alive and singing within his failing, worn out body. No one can teach the soul to do this: he who wishes to keep his soul alive must find it out by his study. For this reason, the speaker has traveled across the sea to the ancient holy city of Byzantium.

The speaker addresses the long-dead wise men and saints of Byzantium, now engulfed in the fire of God's glory, like the beautiful golden tiling that adorns Byzantine churches. He tells them to get out of this fire, spin in a spiral like the bobbin of a spinning wheel, and to teach his soul to sing. He wants them to burn his mortal, bodily heart, which is tied to his failing body and cannot fathom or accept his mortality, and lead him into his everlasting world of art.

When he leaves his body behind, the speaker says, he will never again assume mortal physical form. Instead, that gold would be a beautiful piece of art, something that metal workers in ancient Greece would have hung in the emperor's bedroom. Or he would be a golden bird placed in a golden tree, where he, like the sages, could teach people his eternal and supernatural knowledge—their transcendent understanding of the past, present, and future.
