One summer night (guided by nature) I came across a small, rocky bay on a boat tied to a willow tree. This was where it was usually kept. I immediately unbuckled the boat, went inside and pushed it into the lake. It was a sneaky act that gave me a mix of joy and anxiety. The echo of the mountain, like a sound, accompanied the motion of my boat. My paddle left small circular waves on either side of the boat, glistening lazily in the moonlight, until they all dissolved into a long path of sparkling water in the boat's wake. Now I was like someone who is proud of how good he is at sailing. To line up in a straight line to my destination, I closed my eyes on a certain jagged mountain peak, the furthest point on the horizon. Above the summit were only stars and a gray sky. My boat was an elf's boat. I loudly lowered my paddle into the silent lake, and as I rose with each rowing motion, my boat swung forward in the water. Then, from behind that jagged mountain peak (which was, by far, the highest point on the horizon) an even greater peak, black and huge, appeared. As if it were some living, thinking creature, this other mountain raising its head. I cried and cried. The mountain was getting bigger and bigger, a frightening figure that rose above me and blocked the stars. I still felt like I was alive, like a living being, with its own intentions and way of going. It seemed that he was following me. I was trembling with fear and my tail started trembling. I turned and headed back to the willow tree, the dock of the boat amidst the still water. I left the boat there, and then went back home through the fields in a sad and serious mood. After this experience, for several days, my thoughts were occupied by a dark, mysterious intuition that there were forms of existence of which I knew nothing. My thoughts were covered in a kind of darkness; You might call it solitude or empty abandon. No recognizable shape remained in my mind, no good image of a tree, the sea or the sky. I could not imagine the greenery of the fields. Instead, gigantic, mighty shapes—which didn't live like people are alive—moved slowly through my mind during the day. At night, these figures gave me disturbing dreams.
