About Serampore College
Serampore College is located in Serampore, in West Bengal state, India. Established in 1818, it is the second oldest college in the country after Presidency College Calcutta, and one of the oldest educational institutes in India that is still functional. The college consists of two entities: The theological faculty and a separate college with faculties of arts, science, commerce.
The Serampore Mission of the Baptist Missionary Society was established on 10th January 1800, when William Carey had already spent about seven years in North Bengal since his arrival in Calcutta from Britain on 11th November 1793. He joined the team of other missionaries including Joshua Marshman and William Ward. In July 1818. Carey, Marshman and Ward published the prospectus of Serampore College “for the instruction of Asiatic Christians and other Youths in Eastern Literature and European Science.” While the founders laid great emphasis on the training of Christian leaders for the church in Asia, they had desired to have the College opening its doors to all students irrespective of their caste, colour and creed. It was made imperative to admit students with the understanding that the instruction would be secular in character. Consequently, the College has gained worldwide reputation as a unique educational institution imparting instruction in as diverse disciplines as Christian Theology and liberal Arts, Science and Commerce.

Post Graduate Courses
The college offers M.Sc. Courses in Human Physiology,Zoology& Botany on a self-financing scheme. Successful candidates are awarded degrees by the University of Calcutta.
M. SC. IN HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY
The college was granted permission for introduction of M. Sc. course in Human Physiology (Semester System) by West Bengal Higher Education Council (vide letter no. PG-CU/MS/95/SCHE/2009 dated 13 April 2009) and University of Calcutta (resolution of the Syndicate dated 29/07/2009 vide item no. 43). The department has introduced the above affiliated course from the session 2010-2011. Initially 20 seats have been approved for the course and we are following the syllabus and regulations of University of Calcutta. The department offers following special papers on:
- Biochemistry.
- Sports & Exercise Physiology.
- Endocrinology & Reproductive Physiology.
- Environmental Physiology.
The department is dedicated to the academic responsibilities. Apart from curriculum, department is encouraging the students for their research activities.
M. SC. IN ZOOLOGY
The year 2009 became another glorious year in the annals of Serampore College when the Department of Zoology opened the first Post-Graduate Course in this age-old institution. The course is run in Semester System under the University of Calcutta. The intake capacity is 25 and at present following five elective papers are running:

- » Molecular Cell Biology
- » Ecology
With the passionate involvement of the staff and students alike, the department is marching steadily towards academic excellence with all vigour and colour. The teachers are actively engaged in scientific research which is evident from the four UGC minor and one major research projects already completed in the department and one UGC Major Research Project currently undertaken. Students, apart from their regular classroom studies, are constantly encouraged and oriented towards planning their future career with programmes like outside laboratory visits, field training and workshops, participation in seminars and conferences etc.
M.SC. IN BOTANY
Department of Botany, Serampore College has introduced M. Sc. Course in Botany in the year 2015, under the University of Calcutta. Since then the course is running successfully with 20 students each year. The department strictly follow the Rules and Regulations of University of Calcutta, particularly admission process and academic curriculum including syllabus. Currently the Department offers four Special Papers:
- Plant Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
- Plant Taxonomy and Biosystematics.
- Microbiology
- Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology.
Apart from class teaching, Department regularly arrange 4-5 field study in different phytogeographical zones throughout India. Department also encourages students are to participate in different workshops, Conferences, seminars and symposia throughout the year. Department has well equipped AC class rooms, laboratories, modern instruments and journals for research activities.
