About Netaji Subhas Mahavidyalaya
Netaji Subhas Mahavidyalaya, also known as Haldibari College, established in 1985, is general degree college in Haldibari. It offers undergraduate courses in arts and commerce. The campus is in the Cooch Behar district. It is affiliated to Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University.
NETAJI SUBHAS MAHAVIDYALAYA ,popularly known as Haldibari College was established in 1985 by the active manoeuvre of local educationists. Haldibari is a semi-urban area situated more than 140 km away from district headquarter of Cooch Behar. It is inhabited mainly by people from scheduled caste and minority communities. Before the establishment of this college, there were only two schools namely Haldibari High School and Haldibari Girls’ High school.
Therefore, after passing out from the school level, students had to go to either Jalpaiguri, Siliguri or Coochbehar for higher education. As a result, many students could not acquire higher education in spite of having a keen desire for knowledge. Moreover, the situation of the girl students was worse as they used to face tremendous difficulty to travel distant cities for education. People of this locality are poor and depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Under such circumstances, the local educationist and politicians, irrespective of their disparate ideologies, like Sri Amar Roy Prodhan, Sri Upendra Mohan Dey, Sri Kamalakanta Bhattacharya, Sri Manoranjan Guha Roy, Sri Rama Prassanna Neogi, Sri Paritosh Chandra Roy felt the dire need of establishing a college at Haldibari. They conveyed their message to the then Education Minister Sri Sambhu Ghosh. As a result of their indefatigable toil, the college was supposed to begin its journey in 1984 but due to some reasons it was deferred and was finally inaugurated on 16 October, 1985 with 6 teachers and 9 non-teaching staff.
The college began to formally function on and from 18th November 1985. At this initial phase, there were only 32 students. The college was started with 3 tin shaded room and was inaugurated by former Education Minister Sri Shambhu Ghosh; accompanied by Sri Nirmal Bose, the contemporary Industry Minister and Sri Kamal Guha, the former Agriculture Minister in the presence of local educationists. The college started with General course in Arts Stream only. Gradually honours courses in English, Bengali, History, Political Science, Philosophy and Geography were introduced in the college; along with B.Com. (General) and B.Sc. (programme) courses. Now this institution has reached puberty under the tutelage of the present Principal and continues spreading light of wisdom among the young bloods. Till now, the college has produced many learned scholars who are well-settled in their respective fields.
