B. K. Birla College, established in 1972, is an affiliate of the University of Mumbai. It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council awarded with 'A' Grade is a multi-faculty institution of higher education with an enrolment of more than 9,500 students. The campus is spread over 20 acres (81,000 m2) in the prime locality of Kalyan in Mumbai.The Institution is now known as ""B.K. Birla College of Arts, Science & Commerce"".
B. K. Birla College of Arts, Science and Commerce (Autonomous), Kalyan a multi faculty premier institution of higher learning, with an enrolment of more than 7,000 students (for UG, PG and Research Programmes) is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The College was established in 1972, by Kalyan Citizens’ Education Society with the blessings of Late Shri B. K. Birla ji and Late Smt. Sarala ji Birla.
The College is spread over 20 acres of land (including B. K. Birla Public School) in the prime location of Kalyan city and developed as an eco-friendly campus. As an initiative towards green campus, the college is focusing on the use of energy saving devices, minimizing waste, rain water harvesting, etc. and creating awareness about plastic-free campus. The Chairman and Faculty members have sponsored 25 new cycles to the needy students as a green initiative during the current year.
The College offers 22 Under Graduate, 27 Post Graduate courses in Arts, Science and Commerce and 09 Ph. D. programs in the subject of Botany, Biotechnology, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Microbiology (under renewal), Hindi, History and Economics. A Ph. D. program is being introduced in the subject of Commerce. The College also conducts PG Diploma in Bio - nanotechnology and Advanced Diploma in Medical Lab Technology (A-DMLT). In the year 2015-16, the UGC has sanctioned a Community College for Diploma in Accounting and Taxation to our college.
The College has been accredited by NAAC with 5 Star Status in 2002, reaccredited (2nd Cycle) with ‘A’ Grade (CGPA - 3.37) in 2008 and reaccredited (3rd Cycle) and awarded ‘A’ Grade (CGPA - 3.58) in 2014.
The College has been awarded the ‘Best College Award’ (in the Urban category) by the University of Mumbai (2009) and also awarded the ‘IMC - RBNQ Performance Excellence Trophy - 2011’ in Education. The College has been certified with the ISO 9001: 2015.
The College has been sanctioned funds under the ‘FIST’ Programme of DST to strengthen Teaching and Research Facilities in all Science Departments. The College has UGC sponsored Gandhian Studies Center. The Women’s Studies Centre and Dr. Ambedkar Studies Center, which were UGC sponsored earlier are now functional at the college level. The College is also a Centre for Yoga and Philosophy, Epigraphy and for Foreign Languages (under CE).
The College was granted ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ (CPE) status by UGC (2010) and presently granted ‘College of Excellence’ status (2015 - 2020).
The departments of Botany, Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics and Zoology have been awarded ‘Star Status’ by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India, New Delhi in 2017. Birla College offers several UG programmes in Arts, Science and Commerce and PG Programmes in Botany, Biotechnology, Bioanalytical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Herbal Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Physics, Microbiology, Zoology, Hindi, Marathi, Commerce and E-Commerce and Ph.D. in Botany, Biotechnology, Physics, Microbiology, Chemistry - Nanotechnology and Hindi. The college conducts three-year Bachelor of Management Studies (B.M.S.), Bachelor of Science (Information Technology) and Bachelor of Mass Media (B.M.M.), Bachelor in Financial management ( B.F.Mg ) programmes. It has taken initiative to introduce relevant interdisciplinary need-based career-oriented 'Add on' courses. The college also conducts a PGDMLT programme.
The college conducts BA, BCom, B Lib and MBA programme of Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, Nashik through contact sessions. YCMO University has established Virtual Learning Centre at Birla College which enables the students to receive lectures through EDUSAT (satellite). The college is also a Centre of Institute of Distance Education of the University of Mumbai.
