About Durgapur Govt College
Durgapur Government College, India, is the only government college not only in the home district of Paschim Bardhaman, but also in the neighbouring districts of Bankura, Purulia and Birbhum. It was established on 15 September 1970. It is affiliated to Kazi Nazrul University. It is funded and administered by the Government of West Bengal. Direct administrative control lies with the Director of Public Instruction, Higher Education Directorate, Government of West Bengal.
The college offers 3-year undergraduate degree courses in Arts, Science and Commerce as well as postgraduate courses in Geology, Conservation Biology and Chemistry.
Courses Offered
Durgapur Government College offers undergraduate courses in three streams: Arts, Science and Commerce; and post-graduate courses in three science subjects Chemistry, Conservation Biology and Geology under the affiliation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol.
Arts stream
The Bachelor of Arts requires three years of full time study consisting of six semesters. The College offers 6 honours courses and 6 programs in six arts subjects: Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science and Sanskrit. Apart from the specific honours and program subjects, the skill enhancement courses (SEC), ability enhancement compulsory course(AECC), generic courses (GE), discipline specific elective (DSE), modern Indian languages (MIL) are included in the curriculum of the affiliating university. Arts degrees are focused on increasing a students’ knowledge and critical thinking in accordance to the syllabus and curriculum prescribed by the affiliating university (Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol). These courses aim to prepare students with a sound knowledge and skills to connect across geographical, disciplinary, social and cultural boundaries, understand the importance of ethical behaviour and lifelong learning habits.
Science stream
The Bachelor of Science requires three years of full time study consisting of six semesters. The College offers 7 honours courses seven science subjects: Botany, Chemistry, Economics, Geology, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology, and six science programs in six subjects: Botany, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology, Apart from the specific honours and program subjects, the skill enhancement courses (SEC), ability enhancement compulsory course (AECC), generic courses (GE) and discipline specific elective (DSE) are included in the curriculum of the affiliating university.
Masters in Science degrees are offered in Chemistry, Conservation Biology and Geology, which requires two years of full time study consisting of four semesters. These courses introduce a wide range of topics to students, develop reasoning through unfamiliar problems through critical and analytical thinking and to find a systematic approach in analysing solving problems through teamwork with importance to safe laboratory practice and field work in Botany, Conservation Biology, Geology and Zoology programmes.
Commerce Stream
The Bachelor of Commerce requires three Years of full time study consisting of six semesters. The college offers honours course in Accountancy and Commerce program in Accountancy. It aims to provide students with the knowledge, tools of analysis and skills to understand and participate in the modern business and economic world.
