About Lady Brabourne College
Lady Brabourne College (LBC) is one of the top institutions for women's education in Kolkata, India. The college admits undergraduates and post-graduates, and awards degrees from the University of Calcutta. It is a state government administered college and is in one of the more cosmopolitan localities of the city.
The journey of Lady Brabourne College started more than eighty years ago from a rented house (106A, Park Street, Kolkata) situated in the same Park Circus area where Lady Brabourne College is located today. It was in March 1938, that Hon’ble A.K. Fazlul Huq, the then Prime Minister of undivided Bengal, announced the establishment of a Purdah College to address the issue of Higher Education among Muslim women.
Affiliated to the University of Calcutta, the college at its inception began with teaching Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Mathematics, and Economics __ as Optional and Pass Papers that were later extended to Honours level. Sanskrit, Chemistry, Physics and Geography were introduced in 1941, Zoology and Botany in 1950-51 and Political Science and Hindi in 1960. Lady Brabourne was first among the Government Colleges in West Bengal to start Sociology at the Undergraduate level when it was introduced as a Pass paper in 1988. It became an Honours course in 1994. The College was also the first women’s college that introduced Statistics as a Pass/General Paper in the year 2000. While the department of Microbiology was established in 2002, Statistics was elevated as an Honours department in 2005.
Undergraduate Courses
The college consists of 20 departments in various disciplines in the Arts and Science streams, all of which conduct both honours and general courses excepting the Computer Science department which only offer general course and Geography and Microbiology which only offer honours courses. Computer Science was introduced in 2007 and provides another attractive combination option for the honours students of Physics, Mathematics and Statistics.

Students are admitted only to honours courses and are required to select a major subject as honours along with two subsidiary subjects. In addition, two languages also have to be studied. While any of the twenty subjects listed under 'Departments' may be taken as honours excepting for Computer Science, the choice of subsidiary subjects is restricted to certain combinations. From 2006 the college follows the new (1+1+1) system of examination as stipulated by Calcutta University.
The academic session is reckoned from June to May of every year, and all academic programmes including examinations are listed date-wise in an academic college calendar published annually.
Students are accepted from all Indian boards as well as from abroad. Admission to the Degree courses usually begin after the results of the Higher Secondary Examinations conducted by the Council for the Higher Secondary Education, West Bengal are published. Admission is conducted strictly on the basis of merit. In some cases candidates may be required to sit for written tests in their intended honours subject.

Geography
A M.Sc. course in Geography was introduced in November 2003 under the affiliation of Calcutta University. The total student strength is 27 per batch. The department offers special papers on Regional Planning and Population Geography and Welfare study in second year. A well equipped GIS laboratory is available to the students.
The Department is well equipped with surveying, water and soil testing and mapping instruments. Aerial photograph interpretation is taught with sufficient number of stereoscopes. The Department has satellite imageries available to the students for visual interpretation and is planning to introduce image processing classes as well. The new syllabus being formulated has included classes on the use of GPS for map making. The Department possesses sufficient number of GPS handsets for training the students.
Microbiology
A post graduate course following syllabus of Calcutta University (semester system) in Microbiology (affiliated to the University of Calcutta for M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry) is offered since 2005. The number of seats for this course is 15. The department arranges short courses on Genetic Engineering and Microbial Biotechnology conducted by reputed organisation. Students of this department participate in a one and a half month long project work in the department itself during their third semester.
Mathematics
In 2006, Dept. of Mathematics started a specially designed 2-year MSc. course affiliated to Calcutta University with an availability of 20 seats. The course has been designed with a focus on applications to Computer Science and Mathematical Modeling in various fields. Special papers on Operations Research and Mathematical methods in soft computing are being offered in second year.
Physics
The College was granted permission by the Higher Education Department, Governmenrt of West Bengal and the University of Calcutta to open its PG programme in Physics. Initially 15 seats have been approved for the course which admitted its first batch of students in November 2007.The syllabus being taught is that prescribed by Calcutta University. Condensed Matter Physics is offered as a special paper. During the fourth semester, each student has to carry out project work on theoretical/experimental area. The College is indebted to S.N.Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata for offering support by way of grants for equipments. Faculty support may also be forthcoming.
Botany
Dept. of Botany has started Post Graduation course from 2016. Number of seats in this course is 15 and admission is according to the rules of Calcutta University. There are four semesters in the course and the syllabus of the post graduation course is same as syllabus of University of Calcutta. Classrooms and laboratories dedicated for post graduate teaching are well equipped with modern instruments. The department has a PG Seminar library with advanced level books to meet the academic requirements of Post Graduate teaching and learning .The department has a Herbarium with old and rare collection of herbarium sheets, Museum, Tissue culture laboratory, Molecular
biology laboratory, Biochemistry laboratory, Computer laboratory and medicinal garden. In addition to faculty members of the department, renowned faculty from other Universities and Institutes are invited to deliver lectures on advanced topics of the course.

Departmental Facility: Classrooms dedicated for Post Graduate teaching of both General and Special Papers are equipped with facilities such as overhead projectors and LCD screens to enable power-point deliberation by Resource Persons.
The Department has a PG Seminar Library well equipped with advanced level books to meet the academic requirements of Post graduate teaching/ learning. In addition, the Chemistry section of the Central Library also has numerous advanced level books on the subject. In addition to the Faculty of the College, renowned Faculty from other Universities/Institutes and Colleges are also invited to teach advanced topics for the PG course.
Laboratory Facility: Dedicated Laboratories with modern infrastructural and instrumental facilities compliant with all required safety norms for Post-Graduate practical classes. Instruments available include, colorimeter, conductivity bridge, pH-meter, polarimeter, potentiometer, UV-visible spectrophotometer and high precision digital balance for accurate quantitative weighing. A separate computer laboratory is available for programming classes / project preparation.
Zoology
The M.Sc. course of the Department of Zoology was initiated in 2016 following the Calcutta University syllabus with 15 seats. Our first batch passed out in 2018 with all securing first class. The department has spacious smart class rooms and e-classrooms equipped with modern teaching aids to accommodate students perfectly and well equipped modern laboratories furnished with up-to-date sophisticated instrumentation facilities to conduct the practicals, project work as well as Research. The course offered Ecology and Endocrinology as Special Papers. Besides the well experienced full-time faculties, renowned faculties, scientific personalities and academicians from different famous Universities and Institutions are engaged as Guest Faculty and take regular classes. In 2018, the course switched over to the new syllabus under the CBCS system of the University of Calcutta. Three students have already cleared NET, two cleared GATE and one student has qualified GRE and TOEFL. One of the students has joined IICB, Kolkata for her Ph.D. Students are encouraged to take up project works and to participate in different seminars where they make scientific poster presentation based on the project work. The course aims at developing the scientific temper of the students and encourage them to pursue research in emerging fields of Biology.

Post- Graduate Course in Bengali Language & Literature

Examination : On the completion of each semester a student is required to appear for an examination of 250 marks. An internal exam of 40 marks in MCQ

be a compulsory field work of 20 marks in 2nd semester.
Library Facility : Other than the college general library this department has 2 seminar libraries each for UG & PG sections. A section of PG seminar
library is known as Debipada Bhattacharjee & Reba Bhattacharjee Sangraha. We are grateful to the family members of late Prof. Debipada Bhattacharjee, former V. C., Rabindra Bharati University as they donated 250 books of Bengali language & literature to our PG seminar library.
Ph. D. Guidance : Candidates can enroll for research guidance for Ph.D. degree by three (3) faculty member. In such cases the candidate will be registered under Calcutta University.

RABINDRANATH TAGORE ADVANCED RESEARCH CENTRE :
Calcutta University approved an Advanced Research Centre in favour of Post-Graduate Bengali department with other 5 PG departments of our college . This centre hopes to broaden its area of activity by entering into various collaborative projects and research work. The centre has organized series of lectures throughout the year . Two of them are Sri Jatish Ch. Datta endowment lecture & Sri Pran Krishna Bhattacharjee endowment lecture .
Moreover this centre has digitized version of rare Bengali samaik patrika like Sanibarer chiti , Dasi , Bangadarshan. From 2017 this centre publish a peer –reviewed ISSN journal funded by higher education department, Govt. of West Bengal.
Post Graduate course in English
The Department of English offers a two-year PG course (autonomous) approved by the University of Calcutta. There are 8 papers comprising:

The syllabus focuses on the English literary tradition from medieval to modern times. It opens up at the same time various new areas such as Indian Writing in English, Literature and Gender, Post- Colonial Theory and Culture Studies, Literature and Visual Arts etc. The number of seats for this course is 15.
Post Graduate course in Political Science
Post Graduate course in Political Science was introduced in the year 2016 with 15 seats. By pursuing this course the students of this Department have found career opportunities in the academia, non-government sector and in the corporate sector. The teaching faculty for PG in Political Science includes the Principal of Lady Brabourne College, Prof. Siuli Sarkar and five other Faculty members of the Department of Political Science. Besides there are also invited lectures by distinguished Professors from different Universities. Most students have performed very well in their Masters examination thereby securing a First Class. The PG course has come under Centralised CU CBCS system since 2018.
Self-financing Courses
Computer Diploma Course
- The college has been running a Computer Diploma Course in collaboration with WEBEL informatics for the benefit of the students since 1996. The course has been subjected to regular review to suit the requirements of the students. Since 2005, separate syllabi for the humanities, the bio-science and the pure science disciplines have been framed, each to be taught over a period of two years.

Spanish Language Training Programme
- A Spanish Language Training Programme began in November 2007 in collaboration with WTCC School of Trade and Communication, Kolkata. The immediate goal of this collaboration is to develop and run a self-financing course in Spanish of two years duration on the college campus. The specially designed course, consisting of two levels each to be taught over a period of a year, covering 50 hours of teaching time, will also offer a choice of specialization either in business communication or in literature in the second year. At the conclusion of the course each successful student will be awarded a certificate of proficiency in the language, issued jointly by the college and WSTC. An MOU to this effect was signed on 23.11.07.
Public Relations and Advertising
- The College has also been running a self-financing career-oriented certificate course in Public Relations and Advertising. The duration of this course is for three years. Completion of this three-year course will equip the students to acquire those skills, which will place them better in the Public Relations and Advertising world. Personal grooming, soft and interactive skills are an integral part of the course. Helping the students to develop such skills, with excellent faculty and infrastructure to boast of, is the objective of this course. This course is sponsored by the University Grants Commission.
Multimedia and Animation
- The College started a University Grants Commission sponsored self-financing career-oriented certificate course in Multimedia and Animation from the academic year 2010. The course runs for three years. India has now come to possess an ever-expansive animation industry with an increasing demand for trained talent for the growth of the industry. Therefore, the course on Multimedia and Animation with up-to-date international level syllabus and distinguished faculty has been designed in such that the students acquire the required expertise essential for the Multimedia and Animation industry.
