In the Mahabharata, the Pandavas lost everything in a game of dice at the hands of the Kauravas and had to live in the forest for twelve years. During this time they had to move from place to place continuously for safety and fulfill their daily needs.

One day in the twelfth year, Pandava brothers wandered in the forest in search of deer. The sun was very strong. The five brothers became weary. Yudhishthira wanted to quench his thirst. He asked his brother Nakul to find water.

Nakul climbed the tree and looked around. After going some distance, he saw a spot of water. He went to that place to get water. There was a pond at that place. He was very happy when he saw the water in the pool. As soon as he heard a sound, he dipped his hand in the water. The voice warned him not to drink water before answering his questions. Nakul did not heed the warning of the voice. He knelt down and drank water.

As soon as he drank the water, he fell asleep and fell as if he had died. Since Nakula did not return for a long time, Yudhishthira was very worried. He sent Sahadev to see what was the matter.


Sahadeva went to the pond. He did not even heed the warning of the voice and drank the water. He had the same fate as Nakula did. When Sahadeva did not return, Yudhishthira sent Arjuna and then Bhima. Both Arjuna and Bhima had the same fate as the other brothers.

When the four brothers did not return to Yudhishthira, they were very worried and then they themselves went to see what happened to their brothers. He proceeded in the direction his brothers had taken. When he came near a pool he saw four of his brothers lying unconscious on the ground, all looking dead. He was startled. Before knowing what happened to his brothers, he went down to the pool to quench his thirst. Once a voice without form warned him not to drink water before answering his questions, or else he would have the same fate as his brothers did without answering his questions before drinking water.

He asked her to answer his questions first and then to drink water. Yudhishthira knew that these could be none other than the words of the Yaksha and he guessed what had happened to his brothers. He saw a possible way of reading the situation.

Then he asked the bodily voice to ask a question. The voice quickly raised questions one after the other. Yudhishthira politely answered all the questions. The Yaksha was pleased with his answers and told him that one of his dead brothers could be revived, whom he wanted to revive. Yudhishthira thought for a movement and replied that he wanted Nakula to be revived.

The Yaksha was pleased at this, but in surprise he asked him why he chose Nakula over Bhima and Arjuna, who were known for their strength and skill. Yudhishthira replied that Kunti and Madri were his father's two wives, he was alive, Kunti had a son and hence asked to revive Madri's only son.

Pleased with Yudhishthira's impartiality, the Yaksha accepted that all his brothers would be alive.

It was Yama, the god of death, who took the form of a deer and a yaksha so that he could see and test his son Yudhishthira. At last he hugged and blessed Yudhishthira.

Yama told them that only a few days are left to complete their prescribed period of exile in the forest. The thirteenth year will also pass. None of his enemies will be able to find him. He wished them to successfully complete their undertaking and then he disappeared.

महाभारत में कौरवों के हाथों पांडवों ने पासा के खेल में सब कुछ खो दिया और बारह साल तक जंगल में रहना पड़ा। इस दौरान उन्हें सुरक्षा और अपनी दैनिक जरूरतों को पूरा करने के लिए लगातार एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान पर जाना पड़ता था।

बारहवें वर्ष में एक दिन पांडव भाई हिरण की खोज में जंगल में भटक गए। धूप बहुत तेज थी। पांचों भाई थके-हारे हो गए। युधिष्ठिर अपनी प्यास बुझाना चाहते थे। उसने अपने भाई नकुल से पानी खोजने को कहा।

नकुल ने पेड़ पर चढ़कर चारों ओर देखा। कुछ दूर जाने पर उसे पानी का एक स्थान दिखाई दिया। वह उस स्थान पर पानी लेने गया। उस जगह पर एक तालाब था। जब उसने कुंड में पानी देखा तो वह बहुत खुश हुआ। जैसे ही उसने एक आवाज सुनी, उसने अपना हाथ पानी में डुबाया। आवाज ने उसे उसके सवालों का जवाब देने से पहले पानी न पीने की चेतावनी दी। नकुल ने आवाज की चेतावनी की ओर ध्यान नहीं दिया। उसने घुटने टेककर पानी पिया।

जैसे ही उसने पानी पिया, उसे नींद आने लगी और वह ऐसे गिर पड़ा जैसे मर गया हो। चूंकि नकुल लंबे समय तक वापस नहीं लौटा, इसलिए युधिष्ठिर को बहुत चिंता हुई। उन्होंने सहदेव को यह देखने के लिए भेजा कि मामला क्या है।


सहदेव तालाब में गए। उसने आवाज की चेतावनी की भी परवाह नहीं की और पानी पी लिया। उसका वैसा ही अंजाम हुआ जैसा नकुल का था। सहदेव के न लौटने पर युधिष्ठिर ने अर्जुन और फिर भीम को भेजा। अर्जुन और भीम दोनों का वैसा ही हश्र हुआ जैसा अन्य भाइयों का हुआ।

जब चारों भाई युधिष्ठिर के वापस नहीं लौटे तो वे बहुत चिंतित हुए और फिर वे स्वयं यह देखने गए कि उनके भाइयों का क्या हुआ। वह उस दिशा में आगे बढ़ा, जिस दिशा में उसके भाइयों ने लिया था। जब वह एक कुंड के पास आया तो उसने देखा कि उसके चार भाई जमीन पर बेहोश पड़े हैं, सभी मृत दिखाई दे रहे हैं। वह चौंक गया। अपने भाइयों के साथ क्या हुआ, यह जानने से पहले वह अपनी प्यास बुझाने के लिए कुंड में उतर गया। एक बार बिना रूप के एक आवाज ने उसे चेतावनी दी कि वह उसके सवालों का जवाब देने से पहले पानी न पिए, नहीं तो उसका भी वैसा ही हश्र होगा जैसा उसके भाइयों ने पानी पीने से पहले उसके सवालों का जवाब दिए बिना किया था।

युधिष्ठिर की निष्पक्षता से प्रसन्न होकर यक्ष ने स्वीकार किया - कि उसके सभी भाई जीवित हो जाएंगे।

यह मृत्यु के देवता यम थे, जिन्होंने हिरण और यक्ष का रूप धारण किया था ताकि वह अपने पुत्र युधिष्ठिर को देख सकें और उनकी परीक्षा ले सकें। अंत में उन्होंने युधिष्ठिर को गले लगाया और आशीर्वाद दिया।
