The young woman apologized for stumbling upon his body without seeing him in the dark. He requested her to come to his house saying that the dirty land was not suitable for him. Upagupta gently asked him to go back to his house and told him that he would meet him when the time came. Suddenly the black night showed its teeth in a flash of lightning. A terrible storm arose from the corner of the sky and a long deep sound was heard. The woman trembled at the fear of some unknown danger and ran towards her home.

Not even a year has passed since Vasavadatta, a dancing lady, met Upagupta, a monk. In the spring it was a day's evening in April. The branches of the trees along the way were heavier than the flowers. The soft musical tone of a flute floated from afar in the air of a hot spring.

Upagupta passed through the city gates and stood at the base of the city walls built for protection. Suddenly he saw a woman lying at her feet in the shade of a grove (a group of trees).

She was none other than Vasavadatta, a dancing lady. She was suffering from black deadly epidemic disease. There were marks of small-fox wounds on his body. He was kicked out of town because contact with him could have spread a poisonous disease.
Upagupta sat next to him and took his head on his knees. He smeared her body with sandalwood balm. He moistened his lips with water. The woman asked him who was the kind man. He replied that the time had finally come to meet him and that he was there.
