'Earthquake' is the story of a little boy named Brij, whose attempt to find his younger sister buried under the rubble after a devastating earthquake of one hundred and sixteen hours turns out to be a miraculous success. The story begins with a reference to Brij offering tea to strangers at his roadside tea stall in Garhwal.

The boy talks cheerfully to the people waiting for the bus and introduces himself as a seventeen-year-old man who previously worked in a roadside dhaba outside Panipat. During their conversation, he also tells strangers that the village he belonged to was destroyed in an earthquake four years ago.

It was a coincidence that Brij was away from Molthi when the earth started trembling. He had gone to Pauri to buy his school books and stayed at his uncle's place for the night. The earthquake did not last long. It was for less than five minutes. But its effect was disastrous.

Its center was in a valley near Garhwal. Six hundred and two villages out of six hundred and seventy villages were destroyed. It razed centuries-old mountains, turned villages to rubble and killed hundreds of people. Landslides, which were in the dozens, blocked the road and huge stones were thrown at motorable tracks and roads.

After the earthquake, Brij returned to Molthi. He was disappointed to have performed the last rites of all his family members except his two-year-old sister Bhuli, who was not found by the rescue operators. Everyone concluded that he had been eaten by wild animals.

But when Brij insisted on looking for him among the rubble of his house, an army officer with two of his men resumed the rescue operation, though after one hundred and sixteen hours there was little chance of the child being alive. There was a possibility. But miraculously Bhuli was alive.

However, Brij never got a chance to thank the army officer. This weighed heavily on his conscience. When he returned to Panipat, he worked in a roadside dhaba outside Panipat. He saved money to open a tea shop in Garhwal and serve tea to weary travellers. He could see the face of an army officer in every weary traveller. This was Brij's way of thanking the army officer who had helped him.

'भूकंप' बृज नाम के एक छोटे लड़के की कहानी है, जिसकी एक सौ सोलह घंटे के विनाशकारी भूकंप के बाद मलबे के नीचे दबी अपनी छोटी बहन को खोजने का प्रयास एक चमत्कारी सफलता निकला। कहानी की शुरुआत बृज द्वारा गढ़वाल में अपनी सड़क के किनारे चाय की दुकान में अजनबियों को चाय की पेशकश के संदर्भ से होती है।

लड़का बस की प्रतीक्षा कर रहे लोगों से प्रसन्नतापूर्वक बात करता है और अपना परिचय एक सत्रह वर्षीय व्यक्ति के रूप में देता है जो पहले पानीपत के बाहर एक सड़क किनारे ढाबे में काम करता था। अपनी बातचीत के दौरान, वह अजनबियों को यह भी बताता है कि वह जिस गांव का था, वह चार साल पहले आए भूकंप में बर्बाद हो गया था।

यह संयोग ही था कि जब धरती कांपने लगी तो बृज मोल्थी से दूर था। वह अपनी स्कूल की किताबें खरीदने के लिए पौड़ी गया था और रात के लिए अपने चाचा के यहाँ रुका था। भूकंप ज्यादा दिन नहीं चला। यह पांच मिनट से भी कम समय के लिए था। लेकिन इसका असर विनाशकारी था।

इसका केंद्र गढ़वाल के पास एक घाटी में था। छह सौ सत्तर गांवों में से छह सौ दो गांव नष्ट हो गए। इसने सदियों पुराने पहाड़ों को ढहा दिया, गांवों को मलबे में बदल दिया और सैकड़ों लोगों की जान ले ली। भूस्खलन, जो दर्जनों में थे, ने सड़क को अवरुद्ध कर दिया और मोटर योग्य पटरियों और सड़कों पर बड़े-बड़े पत्थर फेंके गए।

भूकंप के बाद, बृज मोल्थी लौट आया। उन्हें अपनी दो साल की बहन भूली को छोड़कर अपने परिवार के सभी सदस्यों का अंतिम संस्कार करने की निराशा थी, जो बचाव संचालकों द्वारा नहीं पाई गई थी। सभी ने निष्कर्ष निकाला कि उसे जंगली जानवरों ने खा लिया था।

लेकिन जब बृज ने अपने घर के मलबे के बीच उसकी तलाश करने पर जोर दिया, तो सेना के एक अधिकारी ने अपने दो आदमियों के साथ बचाव कार्य फिर से शुरू कर दिया, हालांकि एक सौ सोलह घंटे के बाद बच्चे के जीवित होने की बहुत कम संभावना थी। लेकिन चमत्कारिक रूप से भूली जीवित थी।
