The poem 'Photograph' is an interesting piece of work describing how a photograph can set in motion different types of memories. Photograph is also an indicator that everything in life is fleeting. What has been captured in the picture years ago is unlike what people have come to see years later.

Photographs can also be misleading in nature as it may not reflect how the people depicted in the photo felt at that particular time. The picture can also refer to the inevitable changes that happen with the passage of time and our desperate attempts to avert the inevitable changes that happen with the passage of time.

The speaker begins the poem by saying, 'A picture: Cardboard shows me what it was like.' The picture is of the speaker's mother with her cousins. The picture shows two girls holding the speaker's mother's hand and the speaker is aware that the picture was taken by an uncle. The speaker realizes that his mother was as sweet as him when he was photographed.

This was even before the speaker was 4} colours. The speaker introduces a distinction between the ocean and people, referring to the eerie momentary feet of people posing for the picture washing their feet in the sea.

People change with time, but the ocean seems to have changed very little. It is an indicator of the permanence of nature and the ephemerality of man. Unfortunately, the change in man physically and emotionally is for the worse.

The smiling, sweet face of the young girl was replaced by the sad face of the mother. Just as physical changes are inevitable, mental decline also seems inevitable.

Twenty or thirty years had passed since that picture was taken. Whenever mother saw the photo, she used to laugh. She will tell Dolly and Betty how they were prepared (by their parents) for the sea vacation.

For the mother, that sea-vacation had become a thing of the past. And that sweet smile of the mother, which was captured in the picture, had become the poet's own past. They both faced a sense of loss. Ironically, both were working hard to make up for the loss.

The poet says that his mother has been dead for years. She has been dead for almost as many years as she lived. He (the poet) has nothing to say about the circumstances of his death or the situation captured in the photograph. Silence brings out the deep silence and makes things mysterious.

The picture describes three steps. In the first phase, the picture shows the poet's mother enjoying a vacation with her two cousins standing on the beach. She was 12 or so at the time.

The second stage takes us twenty or thirty years later. Mom laughed at the way she and her cousins Betty and Dolly were dressed for the ocean vacation. In the third stage, the poet remembers the mother with a heavy heart as the mother is already dead. The picture revives a nostalgic feeling in the poet.

Thus, through the everyday common occurrence of a picture being clicked by the seashore, the poet is able to drive home philosophical reflections on the nature of life.

कविता 'फ़ोटोग्राफ़' एक दिलचस्प कृति है जिसमें वर्णन किया गया है कि कैसे एक तस्वीर विभिन्न प्रकार की यादों को गति में सेट कर सकती है। फोटोग्राफ इस बात का भी सूचक है कि जीवन में सब कुछ क्षणभंगुर है। सालों पहले जो तस्वीर में कैद किया गया है, वह सालों बाद लोगों के सामने आने के विपरीत है।

फोटोग्राफ प्रकृति में भ्रामक भी हो सकता है क्योंकि यह यह नहीं दिखा सकता है कि फोटो में दिखाए जा रहे लोगों को उस विशेष समय पर कैसा लगा। तस्वीर समय बीतने के साथ-साथ होने वाले अपरिहार्य परिवर्तनों और समय बीतने के साथ होने वाले अपरिहार्य परिवर्तनों को टालने के हमारे हताश प्रयासों का भी उल्लेख कर सकती है।

वक्ता कविता की शुरुआत यह कहकर करता है, 'एक तस्वीर: कार्डबोर्ड मुझे दिखाता है कि यह कैसा था।' तस्वीर वक्ता की माँ की उसके चचेरे भाइयों के साथ है। तस्वीर में दो लड़कियों को स्पीकर की मां का हाथ पकड़े हुए दिखाया गया है और स्पीकर को पता है कि तस्वीर एक चाचा द्वारा ली गई थी। वक्ता को इस बात का अहसास होता है कि फोटो खिंचवाने के समय उसकी माँ उसके रूप में प्यारी थी।

यह स्पीकर के 4}रंग के होने से पहले भी था। तस्वीर के लिए पोज़ देने वाले लोगों के भयानक क्षणिक पैरों को समुद्र में धोने का जिक्र करते हुए, वक्ता समुद्र और लोगों के बीच एक अंतर का परिचय देता है।

समय के साथ लोग बदलते हैं, लेकिन लगता है कि समुद्र बहुत कम बदला है। यह प्रकृति के स्थायित्व और मनुष्य की क्षणभंगुरता का सूचक है। दुर्भाग्य से, मनुष्य में शारीरिक और भावनात्मक रूप से परिवर्तन बदतर के लिए है।

युवा लड़की के मुस्कुराते, मधुर चेहरे की जगह माँ के उदास चेहरे ने ले ली। जिस प्रकार शारीरिक परिवर्तन अपरिहार्य हैं, उसी प्रकार मानसिक गिरावट भी अपरिहार्य प्रतीत होती है।

उस तस्वीर को लिए हुए बीस या तीस साल बीत चुके थे। मां जब भी फोटो देखती तो हंस पड़ती। वह डॉली और बेट्टी को बताएगी कि समुद्र की छुट्टी के लिए उन्हें (उनके माता-पिता द्वारा) कैसे तैयार किया गया था।

मां के लिए वह समुद्र-अवकाश बीते दिनों की बात हो गई थी। और माँ की वह मीठी हँसी, जो तस्वीर में कैद थी, कवि का अपना अतीत बन चुकी थी। उन दोनों को नुकसान की भावना का सामना करना पड़ा। विडंबना यह है कि दोनों नुकसान कम करने के लिए मेहनत कर रहे थे।

कवि कहता है कि उसकी माँ को मरे हुए वर्षों हो गए हैं। उसे मरे हुए लगभग उतने ही वर्ष हो चुके हैं जितने वह जीवित रही थी। उसे (कवि को) अपनी मृत्यु की परिस्थितियों या फोटो में कैद स्थिति के बारे में कुछ नहीं कहना है। मौन ही गहन मौन को बाहर लाता है और चीजों को रहस्यमय बनाता है।

तस्वीर तीन चरणों का वर्णन करती है। पहले चरण में, तस्वीर में कवि की माँ को समुद्र तट पर खड़ी अपनी दो चचेरी बहनों के साथ छुट्टियों का आनंद लेते हुए दिखाया गया है। वह उस समय 12 या तो थी।

दूसरा चरण हमें बीस या तीस साल बाद लेता है। जिस तरह से उसने और उसके चचेरे भाई बेट्टी और डॉली को समुद्र की छुट्टियों के लिए तैयार किया गया था, उस पर माँ हँसती थी। तीसरे चरण में, कवि भारी मन से माँ को याद करता है क्योंकि माँ पहले ही मर चुकी है। तस्वीर कवि में एक उदासीन भावना को पुनर्जीवित करती है।
