The author has drawn a pen portrait of his grandmother. He presents her as a gentle, loving and deeply religious old woman. His face was wrinkled and his hair was white as snow. She was slightly bent in her back and used to pray to him with her rosary all the time. Grandfather's picture hung on the wall. He appeared very old. Khushwant Singh's parents had moved to live in the city. He lived with his grandmother in the village. She would prepare him for school, feed him chapatis. The school was attached to the temple. The children recited the alphabet. His grandmother was engaged in reading the holy scriptures. On his way back, he used to feed stale bread to the street dogs.

When Khushwant's parents called him to the city, he had to adopt a new life in the city. This was a turning point in their relationship. Although they lived in the same room, she was unable to help him. He regretted that he was learning music at school. He felt that music was not for gentlemen. When he went to university, their relationship broke down completely. She kept spinning the wheel all day long.

In the afternoon she started feeding bread crumbs to the sparrows. Later he went abroad for further studies. When he returned after five years, he was welcomed at the railway station. There was a change in his behavior that evening. Gathering the women of the locality, she used to play drums and sing.

The next day his health deteriorated. She kept on praying while reciting the rosary. Then his garland fell from his hands and he died. The sparrow had gathered in the courtyard. They were not chirping. Khushwant Singh's mother gave him pieces of bread. But he did not eat them. The sparrows flew away when the grandmother's body was taken for cremation. The next morning the servant blew away the pieces of bread.
