Jean Valjean lived with his sister with their seven children. He had a poor family. One day his sister fell ill and the family died of starvation. Jean Valjean looked for work in every corner but could not find work. He could not see the children hungry. There was no help from anyone so he decided to steal. He stole some bread but was sentenced to nineteen years in the galley. Then his life was the ultimate hell. They chained him like a wild animal. They treated him like an animal, they starved him and made him work. He was not treated as a man. He tried to run away many times but in vain. He was caught every time and the court extended his sentence. He lived the life of a prisoner for nineteen years and came out hardened.

He decided to work and earn his living but could not find work. Everyone sent him out without helping him. He roamed without food for three days. They regarded him as a criminal. Moving aimlessly, he came to a bishop's house. The bishop's sister, Baptistine, was ready to serve dinner.

Jean Valjean (convict) introduces himself to the bishop and asks for food. The bishop was very kind. He asked his sister to keep another place for Jean Valjean as well as some sheets to stake in Kolkov. Bishop addressed her as a friend and told her to make her feel at home. There was a small lamp which gave poor light. So the bishop asked his sister to bring silver lamps and light them. She brought them and served dinner which consisted of soup, paneer, mutton and a big roti. The criminal eats quickly. He then told his story to the bishop.

The bishop heard her story and told her to lie down and sleep on the couch. Accordingly Jean Valjean slept but he woke up in the middle of the night because of his bed as he had not slept on the bed.

Just then the clock made two Jean Valjeans think about the silverware. He wanted to steal them. So he came into the next room and saw the rays of moonlight shining on the face of the bishop. Then he went straight to the cupboard, ran away with the silverware.

The Baptist brought the theft to the notice of his brother (bishop). The bishop did not lose his temper. He only told that the silverware belonged to the poor. During this four policemen entered the bishop's house and they had brought Jean Valjean with them after seeing him, the bishop told the policemen that he had given the man a swirl pot. The police left him and left.

Jean Valjean looked at the bishop in astonishment and found no words to describe the bishop's nobility. The bishop told him to take all the candles with him and that his doors were always open for him. Jean Valjean thanks him and leaves. He led the life of an honest person and lived happily by helping poor people like himself.

जीन वलजेन अपनी बहन के साथ अपने सात बच्चों के साथ रहते थे। उनका एक गरीब परिवार था। एक दिन उसकी बहन बीमार पड़ गई और परिवार भूखा मर गया। जीन वलजीन ने कोने-कोने में काम की तलाश की लेकिन उन्हें काम नहीं मिला। वह बच्चों को भूखा नहीं देख सका। किसी से कोई मदद नहीं मिली तो उसने चोरी करने का फैसला किया। उसने कुछ रोटी चुरा ली लेकिन उसे गैली में उन्नीस साल की सजा सुनाई गई। तब उनका जीवन परम नरक था। उन्होंने उसे जंगली जानवर की तरह जंजीर में जकड़ लिया। उन्होंने उसके साथ जानवर जैसा व्यवहार किया, उन्होंने उसे भूखा रखा और उससे काम लिया। उसके साथ एक आदमी के रूप में व्यवहार नहीं किया जाता था। उसने कई बार भागने की कोशिश की लेकिन व्यर्थ। वह हर बार पकड़ा गया और अदालत ने उसकी सजा बढ़ा दी। उसने उन्नीस वर्षों तक एक कैदी का जीवन व्यतीत किया और वह कठोर होकर निकला।

उसने काम करने और अपना जीवन यापन करने का फैसला किया लेकिन उसे काम नहीं मिला। सभी ने उसकी मदद किए बिना उसे बाहर भेज दिया। वह तीन दिन तक बिना भोजन के घूमता रहा। वे उसे एक अपराधी के रूप में मानते थे। बिना लक्ष्य के चलते हुए, वह एक बिशप के घर आया। बिशप की बहन बैपटिस्टाइन रात का खाना परोसने के लिए तैयार थी।

जीन वलजेन (दोषी) ने बिशप से अपना परिचय दिया और भोजन मांगा। बिशप बहुत दयालु था। उसने अपनी बहन से कहा कि वह जीन वलजीन के लिए एक और जगह रखे और साथ ही कुछ चादरें कोल्कोव में दांव पर लगाने के लिए। बिशप ने उसे दोस्त के रूप में संबोधित किया और उसे घर जैसा महसूस करने के लिए कहा। एक छोटा सा दीपक था, जो खराब रोशनी देता था। इसलिए धर्माध्यक्ष ने अपनी बहन से कहा कि चांदी के दीये ले आओ और उन्हें जलाओ। वह उन्हें ले आई और रात का खाना परोसा जिसमें सूप, पनीर, मटन और एक बड़ी रोटी शामिल थी। अपराधी जल्दी खाता है। इसके बाद उन्होंने बिशप को अपनी कहानी सुनाई।

बिशप ने उसकी कहानी सुनी और उससे कहा कि लेट जाओ और सोफे पर सो जाओ। तदनुसार जीन वलजीन सो गए लेकिन वह अपने बिस्तर के कारण आधी रात को जाग गए क्योंकि वे बिस्तर पर नहीं सोए थे।

तभी घड़ी ने दो ज्यां वलजीन को चांदी के बर्तन के बारे में सोचना शुरू कर दिया। वह उन्हें चुराना चाहता था। तो वह बगल के कमरे में आया और देखा कि चांदनी की किरणें बिशप के चेहरे पर चमक रही हैं। फिर वह सीधे कपबोर्ड के पास गया, चांदी का बर्तन लेकर फरार हो गया।

बैपटिस्ट ने चोरी को अपने भाई (बिशप) के संज्ञान में लाया। बिशप ने अपना आपा नहीं खोया। उसने सिर्फ इतना बताया कि चांदी के बर्तन गरीबों के हैं। इस दौरान चार पुलिसकर्मी बिशप के घर में घुसे और वे उसे देखकर जीन वलजीन को अपने साथ ले आए थे, बिशप ने पुलिसकर्मियों से कहा कि उसने उस आदमी को ज़ुल्फ़ का बर्तन दे दिया है. पुलिस उसे छोड़कर चली गई।

जीन वलजेन ने बिशप को आश्चर्य से देखा और उन्हें बिशप के बड़प्पन का वर्णन करने के लिए कोई शब्द नहीं मिला। बिशप ने उससे कहा कि वह सभी मोमबत्ती अपने साथ ले जाए और उसके लिए उसके दरवाजे हमेशा खुले हैं। जीन वलजेन ने उसे धन्यवाद दिया और चला गया। उन्होंने एक ईमानदार व्यक्ति का जीवन व्यतीत किया और अपने जैसे गरीब लोगों की मदद करके खुशी-खुशी जीवन व्यतीत किया।
