'The Village Schoolmaster' is a quote from Goldsmith's famous long poem 'The Deserted Village' in which he describes the decline of a village in 19th century Ireland. The quote describing the schoolmaster is said to have been inspired by Thomas Byrne, a former soldier who taught Goldsmith as a child.

The village schoolmaster used to run his own small school in a small village. It was situated next to an irregular fence that surrounded the village path with full bloom, beautiful but ornamental furrows. He was a very strict disciplinarian. He was familiar with the poet and all other tantrums as he had endured the wrath of the Guru. His face was the subject of careful scrutiny. The students were afraid of him and looked on his face to feel his current state of mind. The misfortune of the day was written on his forehead or between his eyebrows.

The schoolmaster was a paradox. Although he was harsh, he was kind and good-natured. He had a stock of jokes. When he told them, the children burst into mock laughter, pretending the jokes were too funny. If the children saw a frown on their forehead, they broadcast the sad news in one voice to the whole class. But he was basically a kind man. If there was anything wrong with him, it was his love for learning. He wanted his disciples to become true scholars and hence, he had to make demands with them.

The villagers were unanimous that he was indeed a learned man. Of course he could write in arithmetic and could also work out the sum. He could also survey the land, forecast the weather and tides. In addition, he was able to measure the contents of a vessel. He was also adept at reasoning. Even Parson acknowledged his skill in debate. Even after losing, the schoolmaster kept on arguing.

He became more irritable and used to lash out at his opponent. Villagers who do not understand will be convinced that the schoolmaster is setting his point of view very well. They both stood between the debaters and witnessed the verbal duel. He was stunned to hear the high-pitched and incomprehensible words used by the schoolmaster. They looked at him and wondered how his small head could hold such a huge store of knowledge.

गांव के स्कूल मास्टर एक छोटे से गांव में अपना छोटा स्कूल चलाते थे। यह अनियमित बाड़ के बगल में स्थित था जिसने गाँव के रास्ते को पूर्ण रूप से खिले हुए, सुंदर लेकिन सजावटी फर्ज़ के साथ घेर लिया था। वह बहुत सख्त अनुशासक था। वह कवि और अन्य सभी नखरों से परिचित था क्योंकि उन्होंने गुरु के क्रोध को सहन किया था। उनका चेहरा सावधानीपूर्वक जांच का विषय था। छात्र उससे डरते थे और उसके चेहरे पर उसकी वर्तमान मनःस्थिति को महसूस करने के लिए देखते थे। दिन का दुर्भाग्य उसके माथे पर या भौंहों के बीच में लिखा हुआ था।

स्कूल मास्टर एक विरोधाभास था। हालांकि वह कठोर था, लेकिन वह दयालु और नेकदिल था। उनके पास चुटकुलों का भंडार था। जब उसने उन्हें बताया, तो बच्चे नकली हँसी में फूट पड़े, इस बहाने कि चुटकुले बहुत मज़ेदार थे। यदि बच्चों ने अपने माथे पर एक भ्रूभंग देखा, तो उन्होंने पूरे कक्षा में उदास समाचार को एक स्वर में प्रसारित किया। लेकिन वह मूल रूप से एक दयालु व्यक्ति थे। यदि उनमें कोई दोष था, तो वह था सीखने के प्रति उनका प्रगाढ़ प्रेम। वह चाहते थे कि उनके शिष्य सच्चे विद्वान बनें और इसलिए, उन्हें उनके साथ मांग करनी पड़ी।

गांव वाले एकमत थे कि वह वास्तव में एक विद्वान व्यक्ति था। निःसंदेह वह अंकगणित में लिख सकता था और योग भी निकाल सकता था। वह भूमि का सर्वेक्षण भी कर सकता था, मौसम और ज्वार-भाटा का पूर्वानुमान लगा सकता था। इसके अलावा, वह एक पोत की सामग्री को मापने में सक्षम था। तर्क-वितर्क में भी वे माहिर थे। यहाँ तक कि पारसन ने भी वाद-विवाद में उनके कौशल को स्वीकार किया। हारने पर भी स्कूल मास्टर बहस करता रहता।

वह और अधिक उत्कट हो जाता था और अपने विरोधी पर तीखी नोकझोंक करता था। समझ न आने वाले ग्रामीणों को यकीन हो जाएगा कि स्कूल मास्टर अपने दृष्टिकोण को बहुत अच्छी तरह से स्थापित कर रहा है। वे दोनों वाद-विवाद करने वालों के बीच खड़े हुए और मौखिक द्वंद्व को देखा। स्कूल मास्टर द्वारा इस्तेमाल किए गए उच्च-ध्वनि और समझ से बाहर के शब्दों को सुनकर वे अवाक रह गए। उन्होंने उसे देखा और सोचा कि उसका छोटा सिर ज्ञान का इतना बड़ा भंडार कैसे धारण कर सकता है।
