The short story 'The Goat and the Stars' is about a young farm-boy who innocently misinterprets the church's announcement of Christmas Eve gifts. The declaration said, "No gift is too big. He also has a feeling that he is being watched by God. So he decided to give the gift. But till Christmas Eve, he is not able to decide what to give. However, on Christmas Eve he decides to give a goat as his gift.

He realizes that it is a great sacrifice as he deeply loves the goat-child. He is proud that he is presenting a living thing to his friend. He takes the goat-child under the cover of darkness. But he has a problem. He does not know the procedure to be followed for offerings in the church. He thinks he can go to the church and announce about the goat-child sacrifice to the men in charge. So he goes to church, only to be met with laughter.

He reaches the church at the time of the sermon. The church is full of people. During the service, the pastor mentions the gifts of frankincense and myrrh given to the baby Jesus by the three wise men. At this time, a man and his wife discover a strange smell.

Initially, they are not able to locate the source of the smell. Since the sermon was on frankincense and myrrh, they wonder if frankincense and myrrh could have such a strange smell. Later they learn that the smell is coming from the boy and the goat. When they learn of the boy's intention, they discourage him by saying that such gifts cannot be given.

The boy returns home without sacrificing himself. The author goes on to say that the boy is surprised by the absence of snow, small bells and a moving star. The author suggests that the incident is the result of the boy's despair.
