HH Munro's short story 'The Story-Teller' is set in a train. We are introduced to a family of four, consisting of an aunt and her two nieces and a nephew. The only other occupant is unmarried. The story mentions the aunt's difficulty in keeping the kids busy and making sure they don't disturb the other passengers. She is unable to answer their questions correctly and hence, offers to tell a story. But, even as a storyteller, she fails as the children shower her with questions.

It is at this point that The Bachelor sees out loud that Auntie didn't seem to be a good storyteller. Aunty counters that it is difficult to tell stories that are both understandable and enjoyable for children. She challenges even the stranger to come up with an effective story.

The Bachelor accepts the challenge and begins with a story. Although the story has the traditional beginning of a nice girl named Bertha, it catches the attention of children when The Bachelor, answering a question, remarks that the girl is not as pretty as the little girls in the box. He further entertains the girl by telling her that she is very nice. Children have never faced a paradox like 'too good'.

The Bachelor tells the children that the prince of the country honors Bertha for being nice by allowing her to walk in his park once a week. When children want to know if there are sheep in the park and are answered in the negative, they want to know the reason. Aunty is secretly happy thinking that it will be impossible to answer the questions of 'why' even to a bachelor.

But The Bachelor displays the power of his imagination by saying that there are no sheep or clocks because the prince's mother had a dream that a sheep or clock would lead to the end of the prince. When asked the difficult question whether the prince's death was actually caused by either of the two, the bachelor uses his intelligence to avoid an unfair answer, saying that the prince is still alive and therefore does not answer the question. can be given.
