सर्गेई एक कुशल अधिवक्ता हैं। एक दिन एक भिखारी उसके दरवाजे पर आता है। इसका नाम लशकॉफ है जो गरीबों को इंस्फेक्स करता है। उन्होंने एक टैग्ड, फॉन-रंग का फटा हुआ ओवरकोट पहना हुआ है। उसकी सुस्त, शराबी आँखें हैं और टेड स्पेंड मी टुइम्फ़ार गाल है। भिखारी का दावा है कि वह एक गाँव का स्कूल शिक्षक रहा है, लेकिन उसके खिलाफ उसी साजिश के कारण उसे सुश्री की नौकरी से हाथ धोना पड़ा। इसलिए, वह जीवित रहने के लिए भीख माँगने के लिए बाध्य है।

सर्गेई याद करते हैं कि उन्होंने दूसरे दिन भिखारी को दूसरी गली में देखा था। वहां उसने कहा था कि उसके पास मेना एक छात्र है जिसे निष्कासित कर दिया गया था। वकील भिखारी से झूठ बोलने के लिए नाराज है। वह लोगों को धोखा देने की कोशिश करने के लिए एमएम को पुलिस को सौंपने की धमकी देता है। लशकॉफ जल्द ही टूट जाता है और स्वीकार करता है कि वह लोगों को उस पर दया करने के लिए झूठ बोल रहा था।

लशकॉफ अब हर महीने की पहली तारीख को नियमित रूप से लकड़ी काटने आता है। उसे हमेशा काम दिया जाता है और वह हर बार थोड़ा पैसा कमाता है। इस बीच, सर्गेई दूसरे घर में चला जाता है और लशकॉफ को फर्नीचर की पैकिंग और ढोने में मदद करने का लालच देता है। वह मुश्किल से कुछ करता है और सिर लटकाए वैगनों के पीछे चलता है।

Sergei is a skilled lawyer. One day a beggar comes to his door. Its name is Lushkoff which infects the poor. He is wearing a tagged, fawn-coloured torn overcoat. He has dull, fluffy eyes and Ted's Spend Me Too cheeky. The beggar claims to have been a village school teacher, but the same conspiracy against him led to him losing the job of Ms. Therefore, he is obliged to beg to survive.

Sergei recalls that the other day he saw the beggar in another street. There he said that he had a student of Mena who had been expelled. The lawyer is angry for lying to the beggar. He threatens to hand over MM to the police for trying to deceive the people. Lushkoff soon breaks down and admits that he was lying to get people to take pity on him.

He also tells Sergei that he was in fact in a Rremtam choir from where he was sent for drunkenness. Finding no way to support himself, he started begging. Sergei gives him the job of chopping wood. He calls his cook, Olga, and tells her to take Lushkoff to the woodshed and let him chop the wood. Lushkoff reluctantly follows Olga. Actually, he had never intended to do such a thing, but he was caught in his own words.

After an hour, Olga comes in and tells Sergei that Lushkoff has cut the wood. Sergei is pleased. He gives her half a ruble. He says that if Lushkoff wants, he can come to chop wood on the first of every month.

Lushkoff now regularly comes to chop wood on the first of every month. He is always given work and earns a little money every time. Meanwhile, Sergei moves to another house and lures Lushkoff to help packing and transporting the furniture. He barely does anything and follows the wagons with his head hanging.

But Sergei believes that he has done his job well and pays him accordingly. Eventually, he offers Lushkoff some neat jobs. He sends it to his friend where he is given something to copy. Lushkoff never comes back again.

Two years later, one evening Sergei meets Lushkoff at the ticket window of a theatre. He is well groomed and looks sophisticated. He tells Sergei that he is a notary and receives thirty-five rubles a month. Sergei is glad that he could bring a corrupt man on the right track.

Lushkoff thanked him for his kind words and actions. He also expresses his gratitude to them. Before leaving he reveals that the true credit for turning him goes to his kind cook, Olga, who has done so much for him. He cut wood for him and gave him money.

She will scold him and she will cry for him. He advised her about the evils of alcohol. It is he who is responsible for the positive change in him. His words and noble deeds brought a change in his heart. He quit drinking and started working hard. He healed her and he will never forget it.
