When the prince was alive, he was a happy man. He lived in the palace and did not know about human suffering. His life was full of happiness. On his death, his statue was erected on top of a tall pillar in the city.

The idol was covered on all sides with slender leaves of fine gold, for he had two bright sapphires in his eyes, and on the hilt of his sword was shining a great red ruby. The Happy Prince statue looked beautiful and everyone in the city loved to see their prince. Since he was placed high above the city, on a high pillar, the prince was able to see all the miseries and sufferings that the common people faced in their daily lives.

But the prince remained ignorant of them during his lifetime. This made the prince, once happy, very sad. His eyes watered and large drops of tears started flowing down his golden cheeks. A small swallow, which had descended to spend the night between the legs of the Happy Prince, became curious to know where the drops of water fell. He looked up and the Happy Prince's eyes filled with tears.

The bird took pity on the prince and agreed to assist him in his desire to ease the sufferings of the common people. He became the messenger of the prince and agreed to distribute the good gold and ornaments from his idol to the poor and needy.

He took out the ruby from the prince's sword and started giving it to the tailor, who had no money to feed his sick child. Then he took out a sapphire from one eye of the idol and gave it to the playwright, who was so poor that he could not light a fire in winter to continue his writing. He was also feeling very hungry and was also feeling weak.

But she did not leave the prince. Eventually, he weakened and died from exposure and exhaustion. At that very moment there was the sound of a strange crack inside the idol, as if something had broken.

It was, in fact, the dominant heart that turned right in two at the loss of the sweet and kind swallow. The statue was no longer beautiful and useful. stood deserted. So, the city councilors and the mayor pulled it down. Then he melted the idol in the furnace but the broken heart did not melt. So, they threw it on the dust pile, where the dead swallow lay.
