महेंद्र एक फर्म में कनिष्ठ पर्यवेक्षक थे जो विभिन्न प्रकार के निर्माण स्थलों पर पर्यवेक्षकों को किराए पर देते थे। उनकी नौकरी ने उन्हें कुछ महीनों के बाद कोयला खनन क्षेत्र से रेलवे पुल निर्माण स्थल तक किसी रासायनिक संयंत्र में स्थानांतरित कर दिया।

वह कुंवारा था। उनके पास ईश्वरन नाम का एक रसोइया था। ईश्वरन जहां भी जाता महेंद्र के साथ जाता था और इसलिए उससे बहुत जुड़ा हुआ था। वह न केवल महेंद्र के लिए खाना बनाता था, और उसके कपड़े धोता था, बल्कि उसे बहुत ही रोचक तरीके से कहानियाँ सुनाता था।

ईश्वरन को अपने ख़ाली समय में लोकप्रिय तमिल थ्रिलर पढ़ना पसंद था। नतीजतन, उन्होंने अपने स्वयं के थ्रिलर का आविष्कार किया और इसके बारे में महेंद्र को बताया। महेंद्र को उनकी बात सुनने में मज़ा आता था क्योंकि उन्हें बताया गया था। एक बार उसने अपने मालिक को एक कहानी सुनाई कि कैसे उसने एक जंगली हाथी को नियंत्रित किया जो पागल हो गया था।

उसने बताया कि वह लकड़ी के लिए मशहूर जगह से आया है। वहाँ के लट्ठों को हाथियों द्वारा लॉरियों तक ले जाया जाता था। वे बहुत अच्छी तरह से खिलाए गए बीट्स थे। लेकिन जब वे जंगली हो गए, तो सबसे अनुभवी महावत भी उन्हें नियंत्रित नहीं कर सके। एक दिन हाथी स्कूल के मैदान में घुस गया जहाँ बच्चे खेल रहे थे, ईंट की दीवार तोड़कर। बच्चे और शिक्षक घबरा गए और सुरक्षित स्थान पर पहुंच गए।

लेकिन ईश्वरन डरे नहीं। वह हाथ में बेंत लिए पागल टस्कर की ओर बढ़ा और उसके तीसरे पैर के नाखून को तेज में मारा। जानवर सिर से पांव तक कांप गया और फिर गिर पड़ा।

एक दिन वह पूर्वजों की आत्माओं की बात करते हुए भूतों की बात करने लगा। उन्होंने कहा कि वे जिस स्थान पर ठहरे थे वह कभी कब्रगाह हुआ करती थी और कभी-कभी उन्हें रात में भूत दिखाई देते थे। एक बहादुर आदमी होने के नाते, वह उनसे नहीं डरता था।

फिर उसने अपने गुरु को एक भयानक भूत औरत के बारे में बताया जो केवल पूर्णिमा की रात को देखी गई थी। वह कराह उठी और एक भ्रूण को अपनी बाहों में ले लिया। महेंद्र ने वर्णन पर कांपते हुए ईश्वरन से कहा कि भूत या आत्मा जैसी कोई चीज नहीं होती है। वह कमरे से निकल गया और रात के लिए सेवानिवृत्त हो गया। लेकिन वह सो नहीं सका। उसके दिमाग में भूत-प्रेत की कहानी मंडराने लगी।

एक रात, महेंद्र अपनी खिड़की के पास एक धीमी कराह से नींद से जाग गया था। उसने बाहर चांदनी की सफेद चादर को देखा, और एक गठरी को जकड़े हुए एक काले बादल का रूप पाया। महेंद्र को यकीन था कि यह कोई और नहीं बल्कि भूतिया है।

वह ठंडे पसीने में टूट गया और वापस तकिए पर गिर गया, हांफने लगा। सुबह ईश्वरन ने उससे भूत औरत के बारे में पूछा और उसके कमरे से कराहने की आवाज आ रही थी। लेकिन महेंद्र बहुत परेशान था। उसने तुरंत जगह छोड़ने का फैसला किया।

Mahendra was a junior supervisor in a firm that hired supervisors on a variety of construction sites. His job moved him from a coal mining area to a railway bridge construction site to a chemical plant after a few months.

He was a bachelor. He had a cook named Easwaran. Easwaran accompanied Mahendra wherever he went and was therefore very attached to him. He not only used to cook food for Mahendra, and wash his clothes, but also told him stories in a very interesting way.

Easwaran loved reading popular Tamil thrillers in his spare time. As a result, he invented his own thriller and told Mahendra about it. Mahendra enjoyed listening to them as he was told. Once he told his master a story about how he controlled a wild elephant that had gone mad.

He told that he had come from a place famous for wood. The logs there were carried by elephants to lorries. They were very well fed beets. But when they went wild, even the most experienced mahouts could not control them. One day the elephant entered the school grounds where the children were playing, breaking a brick wall. Children and teachers panicked and rushed to a safe place.

But God was not afraid. He walked towards the mad tusker with a cane in his hand and hit his third toe with a sharp nail. The animal trembled from head to toe and then fell.

One day he started talking about ghosts while talking about the souls of ancestors. They said that the place where they stayed was once a cemetery and sometimes they saw ghosts at night. Being a brave man, he was not afraid of them.

Then he told his master about a terrible ghost woman who was seen only on the full moon night. She groaned and took a fetus in her arms. Mahendra, trembling at the description, told Easwaran that there is no such thing as a ghost or spirit. He left the room and retired for the night. But he could not sleep. The story of ghosts started swirling in his mind.

One night, Mahendra was awakened from his sleep by a slow groan near his window. He looked out at the white sheet of moonlight, and found the form of a dark cloud clinging to a bundle. Mahendra was sure that it was none other than the ghostly one.

He broke out in a cold sweat and fell back on the pillow, gasping. In the morning Easwaran asked her about the ghost woman and the sound of moaning was coming from her room. But Mahendra was very upset. He decided to leave the place immediately.
