गर्मी की रात थी; लगभग दस बजे। एक होम्योपैथिक-डॉक्टर, जो कुंवारा था, अभी काम से अपने छोटे से किराए के कमरे में लौटा था। कमरे में दो खिड़कियां और एक टाइल वाली छत थी। टाइलें गैबल्स द्वारा समर्थित थीं जो दीवार पर बीम पर टिकी हुई थीं। उस कमरे में अनगिनत चूहे रहते थे। डॉक्टर उनके द्वारा की जाने वाली ध्वनि से परिचित थे।

घर में बिजली नहीं होने के कारण उसने टेबल पर मिट्टी के तेल का दीपक जला दिया और अपना कोट और शर्ट उतार कर दोनों खिड़कियां खोल दीं। वह कुर्सी पर बैठ गया और पढ़ने के लिए मटेरिया मेडिका नामक पुस्तक निकाली। मेज पर एक बड़ा सा शीशा था जिस पर दीया खड़ा था।

वह आईने में देखने के लिए ललचाने लगा। वह उसके सामने बैठ गया, उसके रूप और मुस्कान को निहार रहा था। उसने महसूस किया कि उसे खुद को और अधिक प्रस्तुत करने योग्य बनाना चाहिए क्योंकि वह अविवाहित था और एक डॉक्टर था। उसने कंघी उठाई और उसे अपने बालों में घुमाया और बिदाई को समायोजित किया।

सांप कुर्सी के पिछले हिस्से पर झूल गया और बड़ी फुर्ती से डॉक्टर के कंधे पर जा गिरा। भयानक प्राणी उसके कंधे पर फिसला और कोहनी के ऊपर उसकी बाईं बांह के चारों ओर लपेटा। हुड फैला हुआ था और उसका सिर उसके चेहरे से मुश्किल से तीन या चार इंच दूर था।

डॉक्टर ने राहत की सांस ली। वह सावधानी से उठा और घर से भाग निकला। वह तेजी से भागा और एक दोस्त के घर पहुंचा जहां उसने अपने ऊपर तेल लगाया और स्नान किया। अगली सुबह, वह अपने कमरे को खाली करने के लिए वापस आया, लेकिन उसे अपने गंदे बनियान के अलावा कुछ नहीं मिला। कमरा खुला देख किसी चोर ने उसका सारा सामान चुरा लिया था।
