काठमांडू विक्रम सेठ द्वारा लिखित एक यात्रा वृत्तांत है। यह काठमांडू के दो प्रसिद्ध मंदिरों पशुपतिनाथ मंदिर और बौधनाथ स्तूप का वर्णन है। पहला हिंदुओं के लिए पवित्र है और दूसरा बौद्धों के लिए पवित्र है। लेखक पहले पशुपतिनाथ मंदिर जाता है और वहां पूरी तरह से भ्रम का माहौल पाता है। मंदिर के अंदर केवल हिंदुओं को ही जाने की अनुमति है।

मंदिर में और उसके आसपास सभी प्रकार के लोग जैसे पुजारी, फेरीवाले, भक्त, पर्यटक देखे जा सकते हैं। कुत्ते, बंदर, कबूतर, गाय जैसे जानवर भी जमीन पर घूमते रहते हैं। मंदिर के मुख्य द्वार तक जाने के लिए भक्तों की भारी भीड़ एक दूसरे को धक्का दे रही है।

कुछ पश्चिमी भक्त मंदिर में प्रवेश करने की कोशिश करते हैं लेकिन द्वार पर पुलिसकर्मी उन्हें अनुमति नहीं देते क्योंकि उन्हें विश्वास नहीं होता कि वे हिंदू हैं। लेखक पवित्र नदी बागमती के तट पर विभिन्न अनुष्ठानों को करते हुए लोगों को पाता है जो मंदिर के किनारे से बहती है। नदी के किनारे पत्थर के चबूतरे से आधा निकला एक छोटा सा मंदिर है।

हर तरफ चहल-पहल है। सड़कों पर फल विक्रेताओं, बांसुरी विक्रेताओं, पोस्टकार्डों के फेरीवालों, पश्चिमी सौंदर्य प्रसाधनों की दुकानों, फिल्म रोल और चॉकलेट बेचने वालों की भीड़ लगी रहती है। कारों, साइकिलों की घंटियों, रेडियो से निकलने वाले फिल्मी गीतों और अपने माल पर चिल्लाने वाले विक्रेताओं के हॉर्न की आवाज के कारण इतना शोर होता है। लेखक थक जाता है और घर से परेशान हो जाता है और वापस लौटने का फैसला करता है।

वह नेपाल एयरलाइंस के कार्यालय जाता है और कल की उड़ान के लिए टिकट खरीदता है। इसके बाद वह वापस अपने होटल आ जाता है। जब वह होटल के पास चौक के कोने में खड़ा होता है, तो वह बांसुरी विक्रेता द्वारा निर्मित मधुर संगीत सुनता है और मंत्रमुग्ध हो जाता है।

वह बांसुरी बेचने वाले की हर गतिविधि को देखता है और उसके लापरवाह जीवन से प्रभावित होता है। समय-समय पर वह डंडे को जमीन पर खड़ा करता है, एक बांसुरी चुनता है और कुछ मिनट तक बजाता है। वह बहुत पहले से ही बांसुरी के बारे में उच्च राय रखता है।

वह सोचता है कि ऐसी कोई संस्कृति नहीं है जिसमें बांसुरी न हो। प्रत्येक की अपनी विशिष्ट उँगलियाँ और कम्पास हैं। यह अपने स्वयं के संघों को बुनता है। इसके संगीत में सार्वभौमिकता के एक सूत्र में सभी प्रकार के लोगों को एकजुट करने की शक्ति है। लेखक लंबे समय तक विदेश में रहने के बाद स्वदेश लौटता है।

Here we have uploaded the Kathmandu Summary in English for students. This will help students to learn quickly in English and Hindi language.


Kathmandu is a travelogue written by Vikram Seth. This is a description of two famous temples of Kathmandu, Pashupatinath Temple and Boudhanath Stupa. The first is sacred to Hindus and the second is sacred to Buddhists. The author first goes to the Pashupatinath temple and finds an atmosphere of complete confusion there. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple.

All kinds of people like priests, hawkers, devotees, tourists can be seen in and around the temple. Animals like dogs, monkeys, pigeons, cows also roam on the ground. Huge crowd of devotees are pushing each other to reach the main gate of the temple.

Some western devotees try to enter the temple but the policemen at the gate do not allow them because they do not believe that they are Hindus. The author finds people performing various rituals on the banks of the holy river Bagmati which flows through the bank of the temple. There is a small temple half carved out of a stone platform on the bank of the river.

People believe that when it will be fully manifested, the goddess inside will run away and with this the evil phase of Kali Yuga will come to an end. Next, the author visits the Boudhanath Stupa, a Buddhist temple in Kathmandu.

It is located on the busy streets of the city, but one can experience peace there. It is just opposite to Pashupatinath Temple. There is no crowd, so there is no commotion.

The author then wanders the streets of Kathmandu and its local markets. He finds that apart from the two main temples, there are many smaller temples in the busy and narrow streets. The city is fiery, mercenary and religious.

There is activity everywhere. The streets are crowded with fruit vendors, flute vendors, postcard hawkers, western cosmetics shops, film rolls and chocolate sellers. The sound of the horns of cars, bicycle bells, film songs from the radio and vendors shouting at their wares makes so much noise. The writer gets tired and troubled from home and decides to return.

He goes to Nepal Airlines office and buys tickets for tomorrow's flight. After that he comes back to his hotel. When he stands in the corner of the square near the hotel, he hears the melodious music produced by the flute vendor and is mesmerized.

He watches every movement of the flute seller and is impressed by his carefree life. From time to time he puts the stick on the ground, picks up a flute and plays it for a few minutes. He has a high opinion of flute from long ago.

He thinks that there is no culture which does not have flute. Each has its own distinctive fingers and compass. It weaves its own associations. Its music has the power to unite all kinds of people in one thread of universality. The writer returns home after a long stay abroad.
