27 अक्टूबर 1999 को, प्रशांत, उन्नीस वर्ष का एक युवा लड़का, अपने दोस्त से मिलने के लिए तटीय ओडिशा के एक छोटे से शहर एरसामा में गया। ओसामा अपने गांव से करीब अठारह किलोमीटर दूर था। शाम को अचानक मौसम ने करवट ली और कुछ ही देर में विनाशकारी हवाओं के साथ तेज आंधी चली। बाद में इसे सुपर साइक्लोन का नाम दिया गया। हवा की गति 350 किमी प्रति घंटा थी। प्रशांत ने ऐसा भयंकर तूफान कभी नहीं देखा था।

तूफान के बाद भारी और लगातार बारिश हुई जिसमें कई घर और लोग बह गए। गुस्से में पानी उसके दोस्त के घर में घुस गया, गर्दन तक। इसलिए, प्रशांत और उसके दोस्त के परिवार ने छत पर शरण ली, जहां उन्होंने एक ही स्थिति में दो रातें बिताईं। वे ठंड और लगातार बारिश में जम गए। प्रशांत सुपर साइक्लोन से हुई तबाही को सुबह-सुबह धूसर रोशनी में देख सकते थे।

हर तरफ पानी ही पानी था, जिसमें कहीं-कहीं सीमेंट के टूटे-फूटे मकान खड़े थे। फूले हुए जानवरों के शव और मानव लाशें हर दिशा में तैरती रहीं। बड़े-बड़े पेड़ भी इधर-उधर गिरे पड़े थे। प्रशांत को अपने परिवार की चिंता थी। लेकिन वह असहाय था।

दो दिन बाद बारिश बंद हो गई और बारिश का पानी धीरे-धीरे कम होने लगा। तब प्रशांत ने अपने गांव जाकर अपने परिवार को देखने का फैसला किया। उसने एक लंबी, मजबूत छड़ी ली, और फिर बाढ़ के पानी में से अपने गाँव की कठिन यात्रा पर निकल पड़ा। कहीं-कहीं पानी कमर तक गहरा था जिससे उसकी यात्रा धीमी हो गई। कई बिंदुओं पर, वह सड़क खो गया और उसे तैरना पड़ा।

रास्ते में उसे कई मानव शरीर और कुत्तों, बकरियों और मवेशियों के शव मिले। लेकिन गांवों से गुजरते हुए उन्हें मुश्किल से एक घर खड़ा दिखाई दे रहा था। आखिरकार प्रशांत अपने गांव कालीकुड़ा पहुंच गया। हर जगह व्यापक विनाश को देखकर वह उदास था।

वह अपने परिवार के सदस्यों को देखना चाहता था लेकिन उन्हें कहीं नहीं मिला। इसलिए, वह उनके लिए रेड क्रॉस आश्रय में गया। सौभाग्य से, उनका परिवार जीवित था। इसके लिए उन्होंने भगवान का शुक्रिया अदा किया।

आश्रय गृह में चक्रवात प्रभावित लोगों की दयनीय स्थिति देख एन. प्रशांत परेशान हो गए। वहां काफी भीड़ थी। उनके पास हरे नारियल के अलावा खाने को कुछ नहीं था। हर तरफ काफी गंदगी थी। प्रशांत मूक दर्शक नहीं बन सका। उन्होंने बचे लोगों के लिए कुछ करने का फैसला किया। पहले उसने कुछ युवकों और बुज़ुर्गों की मदद से उनके खाने का इंतज़ाम किया।

फिर, उन्होंने गंदगी, मूत्र, उल्टी और तैरते हुए शवों के आश्रय को साफ करने और घायल हुए कई लोगों के घावों और फ्रैक्चर की देखभाल के लिए युवा स्वयंसेवकों की एक टीम का आयोजन किया।

उन्होंने महिलाओं को एक एनजीओ द्वारा शुरू किए गए काम के बदले भोजन कार्यक्रम में काम करना शुरू करने के लिए भी राजी किया और बच्चों के लिए उन्होंने खेल आयोजनों का आयोजन किया। बाद में अनाथ बच्चों को निःसंतान विधवाओं और बिना वयस्क देखभाल के बच्चों से बने नए पालक परिवारों में बसाया गया।

On 27 October 1999, Prashant, a young boy of nineteen years old, went to Erasama, a small town in coastal Odisha, to visit his friend. Osama was about eighteen kilometers away from his village. Suddenly the weather took a turn in the evening and in a short time there was a strong storm with destructive winds. Later it was named as Super Cyclone. The wind speed was 350 km per hour. Prashant had never seen such a severe storm.

The storm was followed by heavy and incessant rains in which many houses and people were washed away. In anger, water entered his friend's house, up to his neck. So, Prashant and his friend's family took shelter on the terrace, where they spent two nights in the same condition. They froze in the cold and incessant rain. Prashant could see the devastation caused by the super cyclone in the gray light early in the morning.

There was water everywhere, in which scattered houses made of cement stood at some places. Inflated animal carcasses and human corpses floated in every direction. Big trees were also lying here and there. Prashant was worried about his family. But he was helpless.

After two days the rain stopped and the rain water slowly started receding. Then Prashant decided to go to his village to see his family. He took a long, strong stick, and then set out on the arduous journey through the flood waters to his village. At some places the water was waist deep which slowed down his journey. At several points, he lost the road and had to swim.

On the way he found many human bodies and carcasses of dogs, goats and cattle. But passing through the villages, he could hardly see a house standing. Eventually Prashant reached his village Kalikuda. He was sad to see widespread destruction everywhere.

He wanted to see his family members but could not find them anywhere. Therefore, he went to the Red Cross shelter for them. Fortunately, his family was alive. For this he thanked God.

Seeing the pathetic condition of the cyclone-affected people in the shelter home, N. Prashant got upset. it was very crowded. He had nothing to eat except green coconut. There was a lot of dirt everywhere. Prashant could not become a mute spectator. He decided to do something for the survivors. First, with the help of some young men and old people, he arranged for their food.

Then, he organized a team of young volunteers to clean the shelter of dirt, urine, vomit and floating carcasses, and to care for the wounds and fractures of the many wounded.

On the fifth day, a military helicopter dropped some food parcels. But it didn't return. Prashant and others devised a plan to get the helicopter's attention. He assigned children to lie around the shelter with empty utensils on their stomachs, to tell passing helicopters that they were hungry. The plan was successful and after that the helicopter started dropping food packets and other basic necessities.

Prashant's rehabilitation work continued unabated. He brought orphans along and put up a polythene sheet shelter for them. He inspired men and women to take care of them with food and material.

She also persuaded women to start working on a work-for-food program started by an NGO, and she organized sporting events for children. Later orphans were settled into new foster families made up of childless widows and children without adult care.

Thus, the Pacific became the savior of thousands of cyclone-affected people. His selfless service to mankind is commendable.
