मैसूर के पास गन्ने के खेतों से गुजरते समय लेखक को एक अनाथ भालू मिला। उसने उस नन्हे जीव को पकड़ा और अपनी पत्नी को भेंट किया। लेखक की पत्नी ने बच्चे को प्राप्त करने पर प्रसन्नता व्यक्त की।

उसने तुरंत उसके गले में एक रंगीन रिबन लगा दिया और उसका नाम 'ब्रूनो' रखा। समय बीतने के साथ, ब्रूनो लेखक की पत्नी से जुड़ गया। उसने उसे खाने-पीने के लिए कई तरह की चीजें दीं जैसे दलिया, सब्जियां, मेवा, मांस, चावल, चाय, कॉफी, नीबू का रस, आदि। ब्रूनो समय के साथ शरारती होता गया। एक दिन उसने कुछ ज़हर-बेरियम कार्बोनेट खा लिया।

उसने उल्टी भी की और जोर से सांस ली, लेकिन बाद में वह ठीक हो गया। एक अन्य घटना में, उसने लगभग एक गैलन पुराना इंजन ऑयल पी लिया। सौभाग्य से, वह अप्रभावित रहा। वह अक्सर किराएदारों के बच्चों को भी धमकाता था। इसलिए, उसे ज्यादातर समय इन-चेन में रखने का फैसला किया गया।

जैसे-जैसे समय बीतता गया, ब्रूनो बड़ा होता गया। उसने ऊंचाई में अल्साटियंस की बराबरी कर ली थी और उन्हें पछाड़ भी दिया था। इसलिए, लेखक और उसके दोस्तों ने उसकी (लेखक की) पत्नी को ब्रूनो को मैसूर के चिड़ियाघर में भेजने की सलाह दी। घर में रखने के लिए यह बहुत बड़ा हो रहा था।

लेखक की पत्नी को अपनी सहमति देने में समय लगा। लेकिन अंत में, वह मान गई और ब्रूनो को चिड़ियाघर भेज दिया गया। अलगाव बहुत दर्दनाक था। घर में सभी विशेष रूप से लेखक की पत्नी ने उन्हें बहुत याद किया। वह इतनी दुखी थी कि उसने खाना खाने से इनकार कर दिया। ब्रूनो का भी यही हाल था। उसने खाना भी नहीं खाया और दुबले-पतले और उदास हो गए।

एक दिन लेखक की पत्नी ने ब्रूनो से मिलने के लिए चिड़ियाघर जाने की इच्छा व्यक्त की। लेखक, यह सोचकर कि वह उसे भूल गया होगा, उसे चिड़ियाघर ले गया, लेकिन वहाँ पहुँचने के बाद उसे पता चला कि वह उसे अभी भी याद करता है।

वे तीन घंटे तक एक साथ बैठे रहे। उसने उसे चाय, नींबू पानी, केक और आइसक्रीम दी। जब 'समापन का समय' आया, तो वह फूट-फूट कर रो पड़ी। उसने चिड़ियाघर के अधीक्षक से ब्रूनो को घर वापस लाने का अनुरोध किया।

अधीक्षक ने उसे अनुमति दी और उसे उनके घर पहुंचाने के लिए विशेष व्यवस्था की। घर पर ब्रूनो के लिए एक अलग द्वीप बनाया गया था। यह बीस फीट लंबा और पंद्रह फीट चौड़ा था और एक सूखे गड्ढे, या खाई से घिरा हुआ था, छह फीट चौड़ा और सात फीट गहरा।

ब्रूनो के सोने के लिए द्वीप पर एक लकड़ी का बक्सा रखा गया था। ब्रूनो खुश था और लेखक की पत्नी भी। उन्होंने एक साथ घंटों बिताए। ऐसा था इंसान और जानवर के बीच प्यार का बंधन।

The author found an orphaned bear while passing through the sugarcane fields near Mysore. He caught the little creature and presented it to his wife. The author's wife expressed happiness on receiving the child.

He immediately put a colored ribbon around his neck and named him 'Bruno'. With the passage of time, Bruno became engaged to the writer's wife. He gave her a variety of things to eat and drink like porridge, vegetables, nuts, meat, rice, tea, coffee, lemon juice, etc. Bruno got naughty over time. One day he ate some poison - barium carbonate.

He also vomited and breathed heavily, but later he recovered. In another incident, he drank about a gallon of old engine oil. Fortunately, he remained unaffected. He also often threatened the children of the tenants. Therefore, it was decided to keep him in-chain most of the time.

As time went on, Bruno grew up. He had matched the Alsatians in height and even surpassed them. Therefore, the author and his friends advised his (author's) wife to send Bruno to the zoo in Mysore. It was getting too big to keep in the house.

It took time for the author's wife to give her consent. But in the end, she agreed and Bruno was sent to the zoo. The separation was very painful. Everyone in the house especially the writer's wife missed him very much. She was so sad that she refused to eat food. The same was the case with Bruno. He did not even eat food and became thin and depressed.

One day the author's wife expressed her desire to go to the zoo to meet Bruno. The author, thinking that he might have forgotten her, took her to the zoo, but upon reaching there he found that he still remembered her.

They sat together for three hours. He gave her tea, lemonade, cake and ice cream. When 'closing time' came, she wept bitterly. He requests the zoo superintendent to bring Bruno back home.

The superintendent gave him permission and made special arrangements to take him to his home. A separate island was built for Bruno at home. It was twenty feet long and fifteen feet wide and was surrounded by a dry pit, or ditch, six feet wide and seven feet deep.

A wooden box was placed on the island for Bruno to sleep in. Bruno was happy and so was the author's wife. They spent hours together. Such was the bond of love between man and animal.
