Suddhodana was the king of Kapila Vastu, Siddhartha was his son and the prince of Kapilavastu. Dev Dutt was the cousin of Siddhartha. Once Siddharth and Devadutt were playing in the garden. Dev Dutt shot a swan and it fell on the ground. Siddhartha saw this and washed his wound, applied medicine and saved his life.

The two boys then quarreled over which the swimmer claimed ownership of the swan. Dev Dutt claimed that the swan belonged to him because he had killed him. But Siddhartha claimed that the swan belonged to him as he had saved his life. They could not decide the ownership of the goose.

So Dev Dutt came to Suddhodana's court to get justice and explained the matter. The king called Siddhartha and inquired about the matter. Dev Dutt claims Hans because he shot him and Siddharth argues that Hans is his because he protected him and saved his life. Both were right. How to decide, the king sought help from his chief minister. The Chief Minister thought of a plan and told both the boys. Hans will decide the matter.

First he placed Hans on the stool and asked Devadatta to call Hans. He did so, but Hans trembled and wept in fear. Further Siddhartha went to Hans and consoled him and said that it need not be afraid, then Hans flew away and sat on his arms. The chief minister told Raja that Hans had decided the matter. Everyone accepted the decision that the swan belonged to Prince Siddhartha.

उसके बाद दोनों लड़कों में झगडा हो गया, जिस पर तैराक ने हंस के स्वामित्व का दावा किया। देव दत्त ने दावा किया कि हंस उसका था क्योंकि उसने उसे मार दिया था। लेकिन सिद्धार्थ ने दावा किया कि हंस उसका था क्योंकि उसने उसकी जान बचाई थी। वे हंस के स्वामित्व का निर्णय नहीं कर सके।

तो देव दत्त न्याय पाने के लिए सुद्दोधन के दरबार में आए और मामले को समझाया। राजा ने सिद्धार्थ को बुलाया और मामले के बारे में पूछा। देव दत्त ने हंस पर दावा किया क्योंकि उसने उसे गोली मार दी थी और सिद्धार्थ ने तर्क दिया कि हंस उसका है क्योंकि उसने उसकी रक्षा की और उसकी जान बचाई। दोनों सही थे। निर्णय कैसे दें, तो राजा ने अपने मुख्यमंत्री से मदद मांगी। मुख्यमंत्री ने एक योजना सोची और दोनों लड़कों से कहा। हंस मामले का फैसला करेगा।

पहले उन्होंने हंस को स्टूल पर रखा और देवदत्त को हंस को बुलाने के लिए कहा। उसने वैसा ही किया, परन्तु हंस काँप उठा और डर के मारे रोने लगा। आगे सिद्धार्थ हंस के पास गए और उसे सांत्वना दी और कहा कि इसे डरने की जरूरत नहीं है, फिर हंस उड़ गया और उसकी बाहों पर बैठ गया। मुख्यमंत्री ने राजा से कहा कि हंस ने मामले का फैसला किया है। सभी ने इस निर्णय को स्वीकार कर लिया कि हंस राजकुमार सिद्धार्थ का था।
