Sir CV Raman was a great scientist. He won the Nobel Prize for his work on the scattering of light and the discovery of the effect of light rays [the Raman effect]. The government gifted him 25 acres of land for further research work. Raman Institute Sir C.V. Raman.
1. He was born on November 7, 1888 in Trichy. His parents were Chandrasekhar Iyer and Parvati Ammal. His father was a professor of physics at Hindu College, Visakhapatnam. Raman used to study there. He was very interested in science since childhood. He had made a model dynamo in his childhood. He borrowed science books from college students and read them. He showed great interest in science. He used to fall ill frequently.
2. He got first class in matriculation examination at the age of 12 years. He took admission in Presidency College and his relatives wanted him to leave science and take history and economics as his special subjects for BA. But Raman took physics and did B.A. I rank in and won many awards. He passed MA Physics in January 1907.
3. MA After that, he went to the UK for higher studies in science. wanted to go because of their health. It was the biggest disappointment of his life. He stood first in competitive examinations and was appointed Deputy Accountant General in Calcutta in 1907. All his relatives were feeling happy. But Raman felt like a fish out of water in his new post. He still had hopes and was waiting for the opportunity to become a scientist.
4. Despite being the Deputy Accountant General, he mingled with scientists and took interest in science. Once when he saw the banner of science, he got down from the moving train and went to meet the scientists. Once he heard that an institution had bought modern scientific equipment, he quickly went to see it.
5. In 1911, he was appointed as the Special Accountant General for the Posts and Telegraph in Calcutta. When he was offered the position of Professor in the University of Calcutta, he jumped on the offer and gladly accepted. After 15 years of service, he became the director of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. Raman Research Institute was established in 1948. He became the director of the research institute.
6. He was a great scientist, he used to forget all about food and rest while at work, his wife would often tell him that his breakfast or coffee was getting cold. He observed the wonderful blue color of the Mediterranean Sea, this inspired him to work on the laws of scattering of light in liquids and discovered the Raman Effect. For this he received the Nobel Prize in 1930.
7. Raman was a kind person. When he was working as the Deputy Accountant General, he helped a villager convert a burnt Rs 100 note into a new one. Once Raman admitted the candidate to the Raman Research Institute, however he failed the examination due to his honesty.
8. Raman received many honors and medals. In 1929 he was knighted by King George V and became Sir CV Raman. Several universities awarded him doctorates. The Government of India honored him with the Bharat Ratna in 1954. The Soviet Union awarded him the International Lenin Prize.
9. Raman died on 21 November 1970 at the age of 82. India has lost a great son and a great scientist to the world.
