Banbir - Udai Singh's half-brother, who was ruling Mewar for Udai Singh.
When the curtain rises we find the infant Prince Udai Singh sleeping on his ivory bed and his nurse Panna sitting on another bed. Her son, who is of the same age as the prince, is sleeping next to her.

Padma, a maidservant, arrives. Panna and Padma are deeply concerned about the political situation in Mewar. From their conversation we learn that Rajkumar's half-brother Banbir had become ambitious. He killed some nobles and suppressed others. He had become autocratic. Everyone was afraid of him. After the death of Ranaji, nothing was going well. Nobody was happy. The nobles had become mean and selfish and quarrelsome. There was discontent among the people and the army. Although no one liked Banbir, no one had the courage to oppose him.

Panna compares him to a snake. She says that Banbir is an ungrateful person, and a curse for the house of Mewar. Padma tells him that Banbir was planning to become the permanent Rana of Mewar, and that he had decided to kill Prince Udai Singh. Panna says if Banbir has resolved to kill the prince, then he has resolved to save the prince. Panna recalls the day she promised Udai Singh's mother, the dying queen, that she would give her life to save the prince's life.

While Panna and Padma are talking, another maid Champa comes running. She tells Panna that she saw Banbir running towards the prince's bedroom with a sword in his hand. Panna requests Champa and Padma to help her. She picks up Udai Singh from the bed, changes his clothes and puts him in a basket and then covers him with flowers and leaves. She asks Padma and Champa to take out the basket from the palace and hide near the gate. She says that she will come with them later. Champa is afraid that no one will help her in Mewar. Panna assured them saying that they would go to Asa Shah, a good and reliable person. Panna is confident that she will surely protect the prince.

The maids go to the basket with the prince. Panna dresses her own son in the prince's clothes and puts him on the prince's bed. She kisses him several times and lies down on his bed. Banbir quickly comes inside and asks him where is Rajkumar. She points to the bed where her own baby is sleeping. Without hesitation, Banbir runs towards the bed and kills the child with his sword. Panna cries loudly and falls on her son's body. Banbir went out. Panna thus saves the life of Prince Udai Singh and fulfills his promise by sacrificing the life of his own son.

जब पर्दा उठता है तो हम पाते हैं कि शिशु राजकुमार उदय सिंह अपने हाथीदांत बिस्तर पर सो रहा है और उसकी नर्स पन्ना दूसरे बिस्तर पर बैठी है। उसका बेटा, जो राजकुमार के समान उम्र का है, उसके बगल में सो रहा है।

पद्मा, एक नौकरानी, आती है। पन्ना और पद्मा मेवाड़ की राजनीतिक स्थिति को लेकर बहुत चिंतित हैं। उनकी बातचीत से हमें पता चलता है कि राजकुमार का सौतेला भाई बनबीर महत्वाकांक्षी हो गया था। उसने कुछ रईसों को मार डाला और दूसरों को दबा दिया। वह निरंकुश हो गया था। सब उससे डरते थे। राणाजी की मृत्यु के बाद कुछ भी ठीक नहीं चल रहा था। कोई खुश नहीं था। रईस मतलबी और स्वार्थी और झगड़ालू हो गए थे। लोगों और सेना में असंतोष था। हालांकि बनबीर को कोई पसंद नहीं करता था, लेकिन उसका विरोध करने की हिम्मत किसी में नहीं थी।

पन्ना उसकी तुलना सांप से करता है। वह कहती है कि बनबीर एक कृतघ्न व्यक्ति है, और मेवाड़ के घर के लिए एक अभिशाप है। पद्मा उसे बताती है कि बनबीर मेवाड़ का स्थायी राणा बनने की योजना बना रहा था, और उसने राजकुमार उदय सिंह को मारने का फैसला किया था। पन्ना कहते हैं, अगर बनबीर ने राजकुमार को मारने का संकल्प लिया है, तो उसने राजकुमार को बचाने का संकल्प लिया है। पन्ना उस दिन को याद करता है जिस दिन उसने उदय सिंह की मां, मरने वाली रानी से वादा किया था कि वह राजकुमार की जान बचाने के लिए अपनी जान दे देगी।

जब पन्ना और पद्मा बात कर रहे होते हैं, एक अन्य नौकरानी चंपा दौड़ती हुई आती है। वह पन्ना को बताती है कि उसने बनबीर को हाथ में तलवार लिए राजकुमार के शयन कक्ष की ओर भागते हुए देखा था। पन्ना ने चंपा और पद्मा से उसकी मदद करने का अनुरोध किया। वह उदय सिंह को बिस्तर से उठाती है, उसके कपड़े बदलती है और उसे एक टोकरी में रखती है और फिर उसे फूलों और पत्तियों से ढक देती है। वह पद्मा और चंपा को महल से टोकरी निकालने और गेट के पास छिपने के लिए कहती है। वह कहती है कि वह बाद में उनके साथ आएगी। चंपा को डर है कि मेवाड़ में कोई उनकी मदद नहीं करेगा। पन्ना ने उन्हें यह कहते हुए आश्वासन दिया कि वे एक अच्छे और विश्वसनीय व्यक्ति आसा शाह के पास जाएंगे। पन्ना को विश्वास है कि वह अवश्य ही राजकुमार की रक्षा करेगा।

नौकरानियाँ राजकुमार के साथ टोकरी में चली जाती हैं। पन्ना अपने ही बेटे को राजकुमार के कपड़े पहनाता है और उसे राजकुमार के बिस्तर पर रखता है। वह उसे कई बार चूमती है और अपने बिस्तर पर लेट जाती है। बनबीर जल्दी से अंदर आता है और उससे पूछता है कि राजकुमार कहाँ है। वह उस बिस्तर की ओर इशारा करती है जहाँ उसका अपना बच्चा सो रहा है। बनबीर बिना कुछ सोचे-समझे बिस्तर की तरफ दौड़ता है और अपनी तलवार से बच्चे को मार डालता है। पन्ना जोर से रोती है और अपने बेटे के शरीर पर गिर जाती है। बनबीर बाहर चला गया। पन्ना इस प्रकार राजकुमार उदय सिंह की जान बचाता है और अपने ही बेटे के जीवन का बलिदान देकर अपना वादा पूरा करता है।
