In the end, he stopped working and lived on an allowance of £200 per year. He was deeply in love with Laura Merton. Laura was the daughter of a retired colonel. Laura also loved Hughie Erskine. Although the Colonel liked Hughie, he did not allow them to marry.
He asked Hughie to come to him with a marriage proposal, when he had ten thousand pounds of himself.

One morning, Hughie went to visit his friend Alan Trevor. Allen was a successful painter. When Hughie entered his studio, Allen was finishing a full-size painting of a beggar. The beggar was posing for Alan standing on a stage. He was an old man, his face twisted and wrinkled with a pitiful look. He was wearing torn, dirty clothes and patched shoes. He was holding a hat in one hand as if begging.

Hughie commented that Allen had a wonderful model. Alan agreed with him and said that Hughie would not meet such a beggar everyday. Hughie felt sorry for the beggar's plight. He asked Allen how much he paid the model to sit. Allen said that he pays ten pence an hour. Hughie wanted to know how much Allen would get after selling his picture. Alan replied that he would get two thousand pounds. Hughie said that the beggar model should get some share of the profit, because he too was working as hard as Allen. Alan did not agree with him. He told Hughie to be quiet.

Ideal
While Allen was still finalizing his picture, a servant came in and told him that the frame maker was waiting to meet him. Alan walked out. The beggar standing till then sat down to rest. He looked very lonely and sad. Hughie searched his pocket and found a sovereign. He thought that the beggar needed more money than him. He went to the beggar and gave him the king. The old beggar was astonished. He thanked Hughie for his generosity. When Alan returned, Hughie took a break from him.

That same night Hughie met Allen at the Palette Club. He asked Alan if he had finished the beggar's picture. Allen replied yes and said that the old model had started liking Hughie. So, she told the beggar everything about Hughie. Hughie tells Alan that he has a lot of old clothes and wants to give them to the old man because his clothes were in rags.
