In the prose 'Piece of Jamaica' the author A. L. Hendrix states how prejudice misleads one's opinion. This incident happened in the life of the author. He has portrayed it very well.

The narrator used to walk half a mile from his house to the railway track every morning and evening. Having red and green roofed bungalows, green lawns and gardens on both sides, it is pleasant for him to walk and gives him good exercise.

One morning the narrator saw two little boys playing in the garden. One is black and the other is white. The narrator looked at the children. The black boy might be 5 years old and the white boy a little less maybe 4 years old. The white boy is yelling and giving commands to the black boy. The black boy did what the white boy ordered. The narrator was also a Jamaican black man. He was troubled within himself. Hundreds of questions came to him. Mind.

The children were very young, in fact they were infants. How could they discriminate at such a young age? who was he? Was the black boy the servant's son? who was that? He wore the same type of dress. Were they neighbors or playmates. Who can it be? Were we, as a race, really inferior that even in our infancy we realized our shortcomings and accepted a position as the white man's servant?

The author kept asking himself this question throughout the day. His faith in the people was shaken. In the afternoon she did not meet the boys. He thought deeply again.

The next morning he found the boys and saw them. To their surprise, the dark boy was giving orders and the white boy did everything.

Then the narrator understood that it was a game and remembered what he had played as a child. He smiled inside himself. A white man was standing near the gate. The narrator remembered what he had thought the previous day and night. The idea came in his mind that the black race is superior to the white. How foolish it is to misinterpret a child's actions. Then he will try to clarify and remove all doubts from his mind. The narrator said these things to these white people. He was surprised to hear the narrator burst out and said that the two boys were brothers and his children and introduced a brown woman as his wife.

The narrator smiled and his soul laughed within him. He spoke from his heart about the greatness of his country and his people and he was proud of both. The white man smiled at the narrator and went to catch the train.

कथावाचक प्रतिदिन सुबह-शाम अपने घर से रेलवे ट्रैक तक आधा मील पैदल चलकर जाया करता था। लाल और हरे रंग के छत वाले बंगले, हरे लॉन और दोनों तरफ बगीचा होने के कारण चलना उसके लिए सुखद है और यह अच्छा व्यायाम देता है।

एक सुबह वर्णनकर्ता ने देखा कि दो छोटे लड़के बगीचे में खेल रहे थे। एक काला है और दूसरा सफेद है। कथावाचक ने बच्चों को देखा। काला लड़का 5 साल का हो सकता है और सफेद लड़का थोड़ा कम शायद 4 साल का हो सकता है। सफेद लड़का चिल्ला रहा है और काले लड़के को आज्ञा दे रहा है। गोरे लड़के ने जो आदेश दिया, काले लड़के ने वही किया। वर्णनकर्ता भी जमैका का अश्वेत व्यक्ति था। वह अपने भीतर व्याकुल था। उनके अंदर सैकड़ों सवाल आए। मन।

बच्चे बहुत छोटे थे, वास्तव में वे शिशु थे। इतनी छोटी सी उम्र में वे कैसे भेदभाव कर सकते थे? वह कौन थे? क्या काला लड़का नौकर का बेटा था? वह कौन था? उन्होंने एक ही तरह की ड्रेस पहनी थी। क्या वे पड़ोसी या खेलने वाले थे। कौन हो सकता है? क्या हम, एक जाति के रूप में वास्तव में हीन थे कि अपनी शैशवावस्था में भी हमने अपनी कमियों को महसूस किया और गोरे व्यक्ति के सेवक के रूप में एक पद स्वीकार कर लिया?

लेखक पूरे दिन खुद से ये सवाल पूछता रहा। लोगों पर से उनका विश्वास डगमगा गया। दोपहर में उसे लड़के नहीं मिले। उसने फिर से गहराई से सोचा।

अगली सुबह उसने लड़कों को पाया और उन्हें देखा। उनके आश्चर्य के लिए, अंधेरा लड़का आज्ञा दे रहा था और सफेद लड़के ने सब कुछ किया।

तब कथाकार समझ गया कि यह एक खेल है और उसे याद आया कि उसने बचपन में क्या खेला था। वह अपने भीतर मुस्कुराया। गेट के पास एक सफेद आदमी खड़ा था। वर्णनकर्ता ने याद किया कि उसने पिछले दिन और रात में क्या सोचा था। उनके मन में यह विचार आया कि श्वेत से काली जाति श्रेष्ठ है। बच्चे की हरकतों की गलत व्याख्या करना बड़े कितने मूर्ख होते हैं। फिर वह अपने मन से सभी संदेहों को स्पष्ट करने और दूर करने का प्रयास करेगा। वर्णनकर्ता ने इन गोरे लोगों से ये बातें कहीं। वह कथावाचक के फटने की बात सुनकर हैरान रह गया और उसने कहा कि दोनों लड़के भाई और उसके बच्चे थे और एक भूरी महिला को अपनी पत्नी के रूप में पेश किया।

कथाकार मुस्कुराया और उसकी आत्मा उसके भीतर हंस पड़ी। उन्होंने अपने देश और अपने लोगों की महानता के बारे में अपने दिल से कहा और उन्हें दोनों पर गर्व था। श्वेत व्यक्ति कथावाचक को देखकर मुस्कुराया और ट्रेन पकड़ने के लिए चला गया।
