In this poem, a machine lists the strengths and limitations of machines. It deals with how machines are made, how they are made to work, the work they do, the limitations and what happens if they are not used properly.

Metal ore is taken from ore beds in a mine. The ore is then melted in furnaces and pits. The metal is removed. The molten metal is molded and shaped and with the help of hammers it is beaten and given a definite shape as per the design. They are cut and smoothed by filing. These parts are tooled and measured to fit into the slots made for them. Thus, a machine is created.

If given a little space, these machines will work. They require water, coal and oil to function efficiently. When all these requirements are provided, the machines work and serve us round the clock.

In the third verse, we are told about all the useful things that machines do for us. They can pull heavy things, transport people and other material. They can push, lift and provide energy to walk. They print, plow the land, weave cloth, heat things and provide light. They can run, jump, swim (walk under water), fly and dive. Like people, they can see, hear, count, read and write.

Machines are not free to do everything. They have no mind. They have a law to follow. They are not made to understand lies. They cannot have feelings like love, pity, hate and forgiveness. If a man makes a mistake in handling them, he dies.

If they get damaged for some reason, they recover and start working again. Though they are gigantic in size, have enormous weight and power, they are the children (products) of human intelligence. Therefore, as long as he uses them judiciously, they will be under his control.

थोड़ी सी जगह दी जाए तो ये मशीनें काम करेंगी। उन्हें कुशलतापूर्वक कार्य करने के लिए पानी, कोयला और तेल की आवश्यकता होती है। जब ये सभी आवश्यकताएं प्रदान की जाती हैं, तो मशीनें काम करती हैं और चौबीस घंटे हमारी सेवा करती हैं।
