What does the world call the man who turned a yellow flower red, who made the plum seeds disappear, made the desert cactus to grow a thousand times faster, made the blackberry white, who made 500 kinds of cherries on a tree grown? Was he a master gardener or a magician doing miracles.

Fei has been awarded many titles, but he was such a simple, hardworking scientist.

The products of his genius play a part in the day-to-day lives of people around the world. His most important contribution is a lovely flower that never existed before him.

He was born on 7 March 1849. Fei was attracted to the wonders of nature and learned techniques for growing various crops. After reading Darwin's book, he decided to devote his life to developing new varieties of plants.

He started gardening in the market at the age of 21. He was successful in selling high quality vegetables. He planted 29 seeds from the early rose potato plant and has produced superior quality till date. This potato, called the "Idaho potato," is native to the northwestern U.S. It is grown in thousands of acres.

He moved to the state of California at the age of 26, as his native place was not suitable for his work. He continued his experimental and original work on plants for more than half a century at "Santa Rosa" near San Francisco. He described his new home as the "chosen place" of all this earth as nature was concerned.

There are three basic techniques of their experiments.
1. Collect a variety of domestic plants and bring in many exotic varieties of plants that, when grown in different conditions, proved to be strong, plentiful or hardy, showing other desirable changes.

2. They grew many types of fruits, flowers and vegetables by changing the water, food, temperature, light or space variations were achieved by crossing plants which had very different properties.

3. He could identify and select those plants which showed desirable changes. He could also select them for further experiments.

Thus he succeeded in producing a white blackberry and called it the paradox. The rejected saplings measured 12 feet high, 14 feet wide, 22 feet tall and had 65,000 berry bushes. Of them he decided to keep less than 2 dozen for further studies.

He was able to grow 526 different types of apples on a single tree, feat for him not only to save space but also to speed up his experiments. The plants they used took only 2-3 years to bear fruit instead of 15 years.

He conducted more than 10,000 different experiments with 600 different types of plants. They developed an improved cherry, a prickly blackberry, a cactus without thorns that was used as food for livestock and a peach tree that could withstand cold weather. He delighted flower lovers with 73 new flowers, Shasta Daisy and a rose named after him.

Many of his attempts ended in failure. The crossing of tomato with potato failed. But his devotion was so deep and strong that no one could let him down. Miracles were happening in all sectors like steel mills, automobiles and markets of commerce and industry. Burbank's discovery is just as remarkable as the glowing cars, bridges, tunnels and singing stars.
