Mr Twinkle was an old man. He wanted a boy to help him in his shop. She needed a guy who could drive Jenny, the pony, who dragged her car. So, they put up a notice which said, "Wanted - Boy to help (after school hours)".

All the boys saw the notice and many of them wanted to try for the job. They knew that the old man would pay them well and that they could work after school hours. George, Henry, Peter and Harry went to see the old man Twinkle. Jack was a poor boy, wearing torn clothes. He was the youngest among the other boys. He was hesitant to try for a job because of his poor condition. Old Twinkle was not ready to interview the boys.

He asked them to play in the yard until he called them. Jack also went there to see who would get the job. All the boys saw a yard gate swinging here and there. They climbed to the gate and pretended to ride a horse. The old door could not bear the weight of the five boys. It broke on the hinges. The boys thought that Mr Twinkle did not notice what had happened in the yard.

Jack suggests that they go and tell the old man about the gate. He said that if something goes wrong then one should accept the responsibility. The boys were afraid that if they found out that they had broken the gate, the old man would not employ any of them. He decided to keep quiet. Then Mr. Twinkle interviewed them one by one. He asked them if they knew anything about the gate. The boys pretended as if they didn't know anything about it. Mr. Twinkle told the boys that he would make a choice that evening.

Jack didn't go back with the other boys. He felt bad about the broken gate. He went to the gate to see if he could repair it. Mr. Twinkle saw Jack and called him in. He asked Jack if he had come for the job. Jack replied that he was not. He said that he was small and not very smart and did not have proper clothes to wear because his mother was poor. The old man Twinkle asked him if he knew anything about the broken gate.

Jack, a true boy, wanted to protect his friends. He said he was swinging when the gate broke. When Mr. Twinkle asked him more questions, Jack had to tell him the truth. He told the old man that he didn't want to take his friends away. Although he asked them to tell the truth to Mr Twinkle, he refused, and he did not want them to get into trouble.

Old man Twinkle tells Jack that he knows all about the broken gate and his four friends. He saw them swinging when the gate was broken. During the interview, he had asked his friends whether they knew anything about the gate. But, none of them had the responsibility. Everyone had pretended innocence. Jack requests the old man to choose one of the boys as his assistant, even though they may not own up to their wrongdoings. Mr Twinkle said that he had chosen Jack as his helper.

Mr Twinkle said that Jack could overcome his weakness by eating good food, and wearing better clothes with some pocket money. Jack was surprised and asked Mr Twinkle why he chose him over the other older and smarter boys. Mr Twinkle replied that he wants a boy who is courageous enough to accept responsibility when things go wrong.

And he was looking for a boy who would be truthful and loyal. He had found Jack to be true and loyal to his friends and was sure that Jack would also be loyal to him. Mr. Twinkle was happy that he had picked the right boy. Jack was given the job of a helper boy. But, with his honesty, integrity and true nature, he became the head of the shop and did well in life.

और वह एक ऐसे लड़के की तलाश में था जो सच्चा और वफादार हो। उसने जैक को अपने दोस्तों के प्रति सच्चा और वफादार पाया था और उसे यकीन था कि जैक भी उसके प्रति वफादार होगा। मिस्टर ट्विंकल खुश थे कि उन्होंने सही लड़के को चुना। जैक को एक हेल्पर बॉय की नौकरी दी गई थी। लेकिन, अपनी ईमानदारी, ईमानदारी और सच्चे स्वभाव से वह दुकान का मुखिया बन गया और जीवन में अच्छा किया।
