Veer Narayan Singh (1795 - 1857) was the first freedom fighter of the state, a true patriot and the messiah of the poor.

Introduction

The state was established in the seventeenth century. His ancestors were the descendants of the landlord of Sarangarh. The ancient name was Sonakhan. The living history of the heroic story of Yuvraj Narayan Singh is buried in Kurrupat Dongri. Prince Narayan Singh had a horse which was a devotee of his master. He used to tour his kingdom riding on horse. Once during the tour, someone informed the Crown Prince that a man-eating lion has been creating terror in the Sonakhan area for the past few days due to which the people are scared. Narayan Singh, who was eager to serve the people, immediately ran towards the man-eating lion with a sword in his hand and killed the lion within a few moments. In this way, Veer Narayan Singh did the lion's work and made the frightened people fearless. Impressed by his bravery, the British government honored him with the title of Veer. After this honour, Yuvraj became famous by the name of Veernarayan Singh.

Another example of people's well-being occurred in the year 1856 in which Narayan Singh along with thousands of farmers raided the warehouses of the hoarders of Kasdol and looted all the grains and distributed every grain among his yearning subjects. This incident was reported to the then Deputy Commissioner Elliot. Veernarayan Singh, getting wind of the complaint, made Kurrupat Dongri his shelter. It is known that Kurrupat God is the god of Binjhwar kings. Ultimately, the British government, with the help of the landlord of Deori, who was the brother-in-law of Narayan Singh, fraudulently made him a prisoner by accusing him of being a traitor and a robber. On December 10, 1857, Veernarayan Singh was tied and hanged at Raipur's intersection, currently Jaistambh Chowk. Later his body was blown up by a cannon and thus the life of a true patriot of India ended. It is noteworthy that immortal martyr Veernarayan Singh, known as the Lion, has the status of the first freedom fighter of the state.

In his honour, at present the Tribal Welfare Department of the state government has instituted an award in his memory. Under this, there is a provision to give a cash amount of Rs 2 lakh and a citation to the individuals and voluntary organizations who have done excellent work in the field of awakening social consciousness and upliftment of the Scheduled Tribes of the state.

वीर नारायण सिंह (1795 - 1857) राज्य के प्रथम स्वतंत्रता संग्राम सेनानी, एक सच्चे देशभक्त व गरीबों के मसीहा थे।

परिचय

सत्रहवीं सदी में राज्य की स्थापना की गई थी। इनके पूर्वज सारंगढ़ के जमींदार के वशंज थे। सोनाखान का प्राचीन नाम था। कुर्रूपाट डोंगरी में युवराज नारायण सिंह के वीरगाथा का जिन्दा इतिहास दफन है। युवराज नारायण सिंह के पास एक घोड़ा था जो कि स्वामीभक्त था। वे घोड़े पर सवार होकर अपने रियासत का भ्रमण किया करत थे। भ्रमण के दौरान एक बार युवराज को किसी व्यक्ति ने जानकारी दी कि सोनाखान क्षेत्र में एक नरभक्षी शेर कुछ दिनों से आतंक मचा रहा है जिसके चलते प्रजा भयभीत है। प्रजा की सेवा करने में तत्पर नारायण सिंह ने तत्काल तलवार हाथ में लिए नरभक्षी शेर की ओर दौड़ पड़े और कुछ ही पल में शेर को ढेर कर दिए। इस प्रकार से वीर नारायण सिंह ने शेर का काम तमाम कर भयभीत प्रजा को नि:शंक बनाया। उनकी इस बहादुरी से प्रभावित होकर ब्रिटिश सरकार ने उन्हें वीर की पदवी से सम्मानित किया। इस सम्मान के बाद से युवराज वीरनारायण सिंह के नाम से प्रसिध्द हुए।

प्रजा हितैषी का एक अन्य उदाहरण सन् 1856 में पड़ा है जिसमें नारायण सिंह ने हजारों किसानों को साथ लेकर कसडोल के जमाखोरों के गोदामों पर धावा बोलकर सारे अनाज लूट लिए व दाने-दाने को तरस रहे अपने प्रजा में बांट दिए। इस घटना की शिकायत उस समय डिप्टी कमिश्नर इलियट से की गई। वीरनारायण सिंह ने शिकायत की भनक लगते हुए कुर्रूपाट डोंगरी को अपना आश्रय बना लिया। ज्ञातव्य है कि कुर्रूपाट गोड़, बिंझवार राजाओं के देवता हैं। अंतत: ब्रिटिश सरकार ने देवरी के जमींदार जो नारायण सिंह के बहनोई थे के सहयोग से छलपूर्वक देशद्रोही व लुटेरा का बेबुनियाद आरोप लगाकर उन्हें बंदी बना लिया। 10 दिसम्बर 1857 को रायपुर के चौराहे वर्तमान में जयस्तंभ चौक पर बांधकर वीरनारायण सिंह को फांसी दी गई। बाद में उनके शव को तोप से उड़ा दिया गया और इस तरह से भारत के एक सच्चे देशभक्त की जीवनलीला समाप्त हो गई। उल्लेखनीय है कि के शेर कहे जाने वाले अमर शहीद वीरनारायण सिंह को राज्य का प्रथम स्वतंत्रता संग्राम सेनानी का दर्जा प्राप्त है।

इनके सम्मान में फिलहाल प्रदेश शासन के आदि जाति कल्याण विभाग ने उनकी स्मृति में पुरस्कार की स्थापना की है। इसके तहत राज्य के अनुसूचित जनजातियों में सामाजिक चेतना जागृत करने तथा उत्थान के क्षेत्र में उत्कृष्ट कार्य करने वाले व्यक्तियों तथा स्वैच्छिक संस्थाओं को दो लाख रुपए की नगद राशि व प्रशस्ति पत्र देने का प्रावधान है।
