कवि ने ‘कन्यादान’ में माँ-बेटी के आपसी संबंधों की घनिष्ठता को प्रतिपादित करते हुए नए सामाजिक मूल्यों की परिभाषा देने का प्रयत्न किया है। माँ अपनी युवा होती बेटी के लिए पहले कुछ और सोचती थी पर सामाजिक मूल्यों में परिवर्तन के कारण अब कुछ और सोचती है। पहले उसके प्रति कुछ अलग तरह के डर के भाव छिपे हुए थे पर अब उसकी दिशा और मात्रा बदल गई है इसीलिए वह अपनी बेटी को परंपरागत उपदेश नहीं देना चाहती। उसके आदर्शों में भी परिवर्तन आ गया है। बेटी ही तो माँ की अंतिम पूंजी होती है क्योंकि वह उसके दुःख-सुख की पूंजी होती है। बेटी अभी पूरी तरह से बड़ी नहीं हुई। वह भोली-भाली और सरल थी। उसे सुखों का आभास तो होता था पर उसे जीवन के दुःखों की ठीक से पहचान नहीं थी। वह तो धुंधले प्रकाश में कुछ तुक और लयबद्ध पंक्तियों को पढ़ने का प्रयास मात्र करती है। माँ ने उसे समझाते हुए कहा कि उसे जीवन में संभल कर रहना पड़ेगा। पानी में झांककर अपने ही चेहरे पर न रीझने और आग से बच कर रहने की सलाह उसने अपनी बेटी को दी। आग रोटियां सेंकने के लिए होती हैं, न कि जलने के लिए। वस्त्रों और आभूषणों का लालच तो उसे जीवन के बंधन में डालने का कार्य करता है, माँ ने कहा कि उसे लड़की की तरह दिखाई नहीं देना चाहिए। उसे सजग, सचेत और दृढ़ होना चाहिए। जीवन की हर स्थिति का निर्भयतापूर्वक डट कर सामना करना आना चाहिए।
