Award Story Summary
From the point of view of the plot, the plot of the story Puraskar is built on historical and imaginary ground, but the historical basis is not clear. The storyteller has not even mentioned the name of Kosal King. Madhulika is the only daughter of Simhamitra, the greatest warrior of the Kosala kingdom. According to the national rules and tradition of Kosal, its fertile land is taken away during the festival of Indrapujan and on the occasion of agricultural festival. She does not accept royal favors because the land belongs to her ancestors and she does not have the right to sell it. Prince Arun of Magadha had also come to witness this festival of Kosal. Infatuated by Madhulika's innocent beauty and simple demeanor, he proposes love to her, which she rejects.

Three years after this incident, the rebellious and exiled prince of Magadha, Arun, takes shelter in Madhulika's leaf hut. Innocent Madhulika falls madly in love with Arun and cooperates in Arun's plan to attack the fort of Kosal and gain control over it. But in the end Madhulika's patriot soul rebels. A terrible conflict breaks out between patriotism and personal love and Madhulika, imbued with the feeling of patriotism, imprisons her lover Arun. When Arun is sentenced to death and is asked to ask for a reward, she immediately goes and stands next to the Magadha prince Arun and asks for the gift of death penalty for herself as a reward. This conflict between love and duty is the soul of Madhulika's character. Just as the beginning of the story is grand and exciting, similarly its end is equally important, artistic, dramatic and exciting. There is unity in its beginning, climax and end. The story ends at a very important place. After reaching this place, the story gives full introduction of its sensitivity and effectiveness.

पुरस्कार कहानी का सारांश

कथावस्तु की दृष्टि से पुरस्कार कहानी का कथानक इतिहासिक तथा काल्पनिक धरातल पर निर्मित है ,पर अतिहसिक आधार स्पष्ट नहीं है। कहानीकार ने कोशल नरेश का नामोउल्लेख तक नहीं किया है। मधुलिका कोशल राज्य के अन्यतम योद्धा सिंहमित्र की एकमात्र पुत्री है। कोशल के राष्ट्रीय नियम तथा परम्परानुसार इन्द्र्पुजन के उत्सव के समय ,कृषि महोत्सव के अवसर पर ,उसकी उपजाऊ भूमि ले ली जाती है। राजकीय अनुग्रह को वह स्वीकार नहीं करती है ,क्योंकि वह भूमि उसके पूर्वजों की है ,जिसे बेचने का उसे अधिकार नहीं है। कोशल के इस उत्सव को देखने के लिए मगध का राजकुमार अरुण भी आया हुआ था। मधुलिका के भोले सौन्दर्य तथा सरल चितवन पर लट्टू होकर वह उसके सन्मुख प्रेम निवेदन करता है ,जिसे वह ठुकरा देती है।

इस घटना के तीन वर्ष के बाद मगध का विद्रोही तथा निर्वासित राजकुमार अरुण मधुलिका की पर्णकुटी में आश्रय लेता है। भोली -भाली मधुलिका अरुण के प्रेम में दीवानी हो जाती है तथा अरुण द्वारा कोशल के दुर्ग पर आक्रमण करने तथा अधिकार प्राप्त करने की योजना में सहयोग करती है। पर अंत में मधुलिका की राष्ट्र प्रेमी आत्मा विद्रोह कर देती है। राष्ट्रप्रेम तथा वैयक्तिक प्रेम के मध्य भयानक द्वन्द छिड जाता है तथा राष्ट्रप्रेम की भावना से ओतप्रोत मधुलिका अपने प्रेमी अरुण को बंदी बनवा देती है। जब अरुण को प्राण दंड की सजा मिलती है और उसे पुरस्कार मांगने के लिए कहा जाता है तो वह तत्काल मगध राजकुमार अरुण की बगल में जाकर खड़ी हो जाती है और पुरस्कार के रूप में अपने लिए भी प्राण दंड का उपहार मांगती हैं। प्रेम और कर्तव्य का यह द्वन्द ही मधुलिका के चरित्र का प्राण है। जिस प्रकार कहानी का आरम्भ ,भव्य और उद्दीपक है ,उसी प्रकार उसका अंत भी उतना ही महत्वपूर्ण ,कलापूर्ण ,नाटकीय एवं उत्तेजक है। इसके आरम्भ ,उत्कर्ष और अंत तीनों में एकसूत्रता है। कहानी का अंत अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण स्थल पर हुआ है। इस स्थल पर पहुँचकर कहानी अपनी संवेदनशीलता और प्रभावोत्पादकता का पूर्ण परिचय देती है।
