'Ghosa' written by Mahadevi Verma is a very touching sketch in which Mahadevi Verma's attraction towards the ruins of Jhusi across the Ganga and the villages near it remained constant. While roaming around in the village, the writer noticed that the Dalit and poor children there should be educated. Mahadevi Verma started going across the river once a week to teach children. Ghisa was also among those children. Ghosa was the son of a widow. Even before Ghisa was born, her father had died of cholera. Ghisa's mother used to support herself and her son by working as a whitewasher in her neighbourhood. Since there was no member in the house, mother used to take Ghisa along with her while working. There Ghisa used to drag himself on the ground and roam around the mother. For this reason his name became Ghisa. At the time of Ghisa's birth, mother had to face unwanted comments from the society.

Its effect was seen at the time of Ghisa's admission in school, that is, Ghisa and her mother had to face opposition from the villagers. The result was that Mahadevi Varma admitted Ghosa to the school and also ordered him to teach. Mahadevi was able to teach the village children only four days a month, on other days she was busy with her work. Seeing Ghisa's passion for studies, simplicity and devotion towards the Guru, Mahadevi's heart started melting. Ghisa's obedient nature attracted him a lot. Mahadevi Verma has supported the characteristics of Ghisa's character through many references in this sketch.

When she is taking leave from school for a few months due to her illness, Ghisa gifts her a watermelon. In order to collect this gift, Ghosa has to sacrifice his new kurta. When the writer comes to know about this, she becomes moved. You get cured of your illness immediately. When Mahadevi Varma returns, she sees that Ghisa is no longer in this world, that is, she has died.

महादेवी वर्मा द्वारा रचित ‘घोसा’ अत्यंत मर्मस्पर्शी रेखाचित्र है जिसमें गंगा पार झूसी के खंडहर और उसके नजदीक के गाँवों के प्रति महादेवी वर्मा का आकर्षण बना रहता था। गाँव में घूमते-फिरते देखते हुए लेखिका का ध्यान जाता है कि वहाँ के दलित एवं निर्धन बच्चों को पढ़ाना चाहिए। महादेवी वर्मा सप्ताह में एक दिन नदी के पार बच्चों को पढ़ाने के लिए जाने लगी। उन्हीं बच्चों में घीसा भी था। घोसा एक विधवा स्त्री का बेटा था। घीसा के पैदा होने से पहले ही पिता को हैजे से मृत्यु हो चुकी थी। घीसा को माँ अपने आस-पड़ोस में लीपा-पोती का काम करके अपना और अपने बेटे का जीवन-निर्वाह करती थी। घर में कोई सदस्य न होने के कारण माँ काम के समय घीसा को भी अपने साथ ले जाया करती थी वहाँ घोसा जमीन पर घिसट-घिसट कर माँ के चारों और घूमता-फिरता रहता था। इसी कारण उसका नाम घीसा पड़ गया था। घीसा के जन्म के समय माँ को समाज की अनचाही बातों का सामना करना पड़ा।

इसका प्रभाव घीसा के स्कूल में दाखिला के समय देखने को मिला अर्थात् गाँववालों का विरोध घीसा और माँ को झेलना पड़ा। इसका परिणाम यह हुआ कि महादेवी वर्मा ने घोसा को स्कूल में भर्ती किया और घीसा को पढ़ाने का क्रम भी रखा। महादेवी गाँव के बच्चों को महीने में केवल चार दिन ही पढ़ा पाती थीं अन्य दिनों में वह अपने कार्यों में व्यस्त रहती थीं। घीसा का पढ़ाई के प्रति लगाव, सादगी और गुरु के प्रति भक्ति-भावना को देख महादेवी का मन पिघलने लगा था। घीसा की आज्ञाकारी प्रवृति उन्हें बेहद आकर्षित करती रही। महादेवी वर्मा ने इस रेखाचित्र में अनेक संदर्भो द्वारा घीसा के चरित्र की विशेषताओं का पक्ष रखा है।

वह अपनी बीमारी के चलते पाठशाला से कुछ महीनों की छुट्टी लेकर जा रही होती हैं तो घीसा उन्हें उपहारस्वरूप तरबूज भेंट में देता है। इस उपहार को जुटाने में घोसा को अपने नये कुरते का त्याग भी करना पड़ता है। लेखिका को जब इस बात का पता चलता है तो वह द्रवित हो जाती हैं। अपनी बीमारी के तुरंत ठीक होते हो महादेवी वर्मा जब वापस लौटती है तो देखती हैं कि घीसा अब इस संसार में नहीं है अर्थात् उसकी मृत्यु हो चुकी है।
