Sonbhadra and Narmada are rivers originating from the hills of Amarkantak, about which there is a popular legend that both were lovers.

Narmada and Shona loved each other. Juhila was a slave of Narmada. Once Narmada appointed Juhila as her messenger and sent a love message to Shona. When Juhila reached Shone with the message of Narmada, seeing the beautiful personality of Shone i.e. Sonbhadra, Johila got fascinated by Sonbhadra and she took the form of Narmada and presented herself as Narmada in front of Shone i.e. Sonbhadra and selected Sonbhadra from him. Got married.

When Narmada came to know of Juhila's betrayal, she was filled with anger and decided to remain a virgin throughout her life. In anger, she started flowing rapidly towards the west on the reverse side, trampling the rocks, bypassing the mountains, bouncing and flowing with the surging waves, but she did not even look back. On the other hand, when Sonbhadra came to know about this, he also regretted his actions and being filled with separation and anguish, he jumped from the high peak of Amarkantak and started flowing towards the east and kept flowing. After walking some distance, Juhila convinces him and joins him, but Narmada and Shona, both lovers, flow in the opposite direction. In this way, both of them do not meet and their love story remains incomplete. Even today both the rivers are flowing in opposite directions.

सोणभद्र और नर्मदा अमरकंटक की पहाड़ियों से निकलने वाली नदी हैं, जिनके विषय में कथा प्रचलित है कि दोनो प्रेमी थे।

नर्मदा और शोण एक दूसरे से प्रेम करते थे। नर्मदा की एक दासी थी जुहिला। एक बार नर्मदा ने जुहिला को अपनी दूती बनाकर शोण के पास प्रणय संदेश भिजवाया। नर्मदा का संदेश लेकर जुहिला जब शोण के पास पहुंची तो शोण यानि सोनभद्र के सुंदर व्यक्तित्व को देखकर जोहिला सोनभद्र पर मोहित हो गई और उसने नर्मदा का रूप धारण करके शोण यानि सोनभद्र के सामने स्वयं नर्मदा के रूप में प्रस्तुत किया और सोनभद्र का वरण कर उससे विवाह कर लिया।

जब नर्मदा को जुहिला के इस विश्वासघात का पता चला तो वह क्रोध से भर उठी और उसने आजीवन कुंवारी रहने का फैसला किया। वो क्रोध में आकर उल्टे पाँव पश्चिम की ओर वेगवती होकर बहने लगी और चट्टानों को रौंदते हुए, पहाड़ों को किनारे करते हुए, उछलती और उत्ताल तरंगों से बहती चली गई, लेकिन उसने पीछे मुड़कर भी नहीं देखा। उधर सोनभद्र को भी जब इस बात का पता चला तो उसे भी अपने किए पर पछतावा हुआ और वह भी विरह से युक्त व संतप्त होकर अमरकंटक के उच्च शिखर से छलांग लगाकर पूर्व दिशा की ओर बह निकलता है और बहता ही चला जाता है। कुछ दूर चलने पर जुहिला उसे मना लेती है और उसमें ही समा जाती है, लेकिन नर्मदा और शोण दोनों प्रेमी विपरीत दिशा में बह निकलते हैं। इस तरह दोनों का मिलन नहीं हो पाता और दोनों की प्रणय गाथा अधूरी रह जाती है। आज भी दोनों नदी के रूप में विपरीत दिशा में अजस्र बह रहे हैं।
