The given poem 'The Ant Amid the Cricket' is an adaptation of Aesop's Fables. A fable is a story, often with animals as characters, that expresses a moral

The poem is about a foolish cricket and an ant. Cricket was used to singing and enjoying in summer and spring. He didn't plan anything for the future.

When winter comes, Cricket starts complaining that the cupboards in their house were empty. As the ground was covered with snow, he could not even get a piece to eat. There were no flowers or leaves on the tree.

Driven by hunger, famine and cold, he decides to borrow some food from a miserly ant and seek shelter for the winter. He will repay what he borrowed from the ant, otherwise he will die of hunger and cold. When he asked for some food and shelter from the ant, miserly and cleverly said that he was indeed his servant and friend.

But ants never borrow or lend. They are hardworking and save for the future. Ant then questions Cricket as to why he didn't save anything when the weather was hot.

Cricket replies that he didn't save anything because his heart was happy in the hot weather. He used to indulge in dancing and singing day and night as the weather was beautiful and gay. Hearing the cricket's answer, the ant quickly lifted the door of his wicket and asked the cricket to go out the door to dance in the winter.

Aesop warns us not to take the fable as a fictional story because he is sure it is a true story. He says that the Moral of the Fable applies not only to cricket, which has four legs, but also to humans, which have two legs. So instead of wasting our time we should not ignore our future and save for it.
