Lesson 'The Touch' is a short story by Abburi Chhayadevi. He wrote it in Telugu as 'Sparsh'. Its translation in English. Jayshree Mohan has done it.

Abburi Chhayadevi was one of the earliest feminist writers in Telugu. His family was extremely conservative and he took up writing as a means of self-expression. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2005.

The story traces the relationship between a father and his daughter in a conservative Hindu family. The father is now eighty years old and his daughter is a middle-aged woman. She is a working woman who is married to a man from the same city, but now lives in another city.

His father, who was eighty years old, now had weak eyesight. He was otherwise healthy but was weak due to his poor eyesight. He had lost his eldest son and was left with only his daughters. His wife was also in bed and his widowed daughter-in-law lived with him. His grandson was working elsewhere.

The daughter had come to visit her father. When the father hears his daughter pulling the chair to sit, he asks her to sit beside him on his bed and lovingly holds her hand and tells her that he was waiting for her to come.

The daughter remembers her childhood days when her father kept her away in the name of 'maadi' for his conservative lifestyle. She also disciplines. She still feels that she has not been able to remember that she was also treated harshly in the name of the difference she had created.

His father had been aboard for two years. She was able to meet her parents when her husband had come to visit her mother-in-law. Sitting beside her father, she relives her hazy childhood memories when he lovingly caresses his hands, tears welling up from her eyes.

कहानी एक रूढ़िवादी हिंदू परिवार में पिता और उनकी बेटी के बीच संबंधों का पता लगाती है। पिता अब अस्सी साल के हैं और उनकी बेटी एक अधेड़ उम्र की महिला है। वह एक कामकाजी महिला है, जिसकी शादी उसी शहर के एक पुरुष से हुई है, लेकिन अब वह दूसरे शहर में रहती है।

पिता जो अस्सी वर्ष के थे, अब उनकी दृष्टि कमजोर थी। वह अन्यथा स्वस्थ था लेकिन उसकी खराब दृष्टि के कारण कमजोर था। उसने अपने बड़े बेटे को खो दिया था और केवल अपनी बेटियों के साथ रह गया था। उसकी पत्नी भी बिस्तर पर थी और उसकी विधवा बहू उसके साथ रहती थी। उनके पोते कहीं और काम कर रहे थे।

बेटी अपने पिता से मिलने आई थी। जब पिता अपनी बेटी को बैठने के लिए कुर्सी खींचते हुए सुनता है तो वह उसे अपने बिस्तर पर अपने पास बैठने के लिए कहता है और प्यार से उसका हाथ पकड़ता है और उसे बताता है कि वह उसके आने का इंतजार कर रहा था।

बेटी अपने बचपन के दिनों को याद करती है जब उसके पिता ने उसे 'मादी' के नाम पर अपनी रूढ़िवादी जीवन शैली के नाम पर दूर रखा था। वह अनुशासन भी करती है। वह अभी भी महसूस करती है कि वह याद नहीं कर पाई है कि उसके द्वारा पैदा किए गए अंतर के नाम पर उसके साथ भी कठोर व्यवहार किया गया था।

उसके पिता दो साल के लिए सवार हो गए थे। वह अपने माता-पिता से मिलने में सफल रही थी जब वह अपने पति अपनी सास से मिलने आई थी। अपने पिता के पास बैठकर वह अपने बचपन की धुंधली यादों को ताजा करती है जब उसने प्यार से उसके हाथों को सहलाया, तो उसकी आँखों से आँसू छलक पड़े।

वह जानती थी कि उसके पिता अपने बेटों के लिए तरस रहे हैं। जब उसके भाई की मृत्यु हुई तो वह किसी अज्ञात अपराधबोध के कारण अपने पिता का सामना करने से हिचकिचा रही थी।

उसके पिता ने उससे विनती की कि अगर वे उसके शहर वापस चले गए तो वह शायद उनके साथ रह सकता है। उसने असहाय रूप से उसकी ओर देखा, उसे शब्दों से भी आश्वस्त नहीं कर सका। उसके पिता फिर से नहीं बोले और चुपचाप उसके हाथ थपथपाए।

उस समय उसने महसूस किया कि उसकी शिक्षा, उसकी नौकरी और सब कुछ व्यर्थ और सतही था। एक ऑटोरिक्शा में वापस लौटते समय, वह अभी भी अपने पिता के कोमल स्पर्श से त्रस्त थी और उसकी आँखों में आँसू आ गए थे।
