Long ago people believed that the Earth was stationary in space and that the Sun and all other heavenly bodies revolved around it.

The great scientist and astronomer Galileo Galilei first brought forth the fact that the Earth revolves around the Sun.

He was born in 1564 in Pisa, Italy. In 1608 Lippersay invented a telescope that magnified objects many times larger. Then Galileo, an Italian scientist, developed the telescope and made a telescope that brought objects thirty times closer. He was later appointed Professor for Life at the University of Padua by the King of Venice.

With the help of this telescope, he made important discoveries about celestial objects. They found that Jupiter had a small moon orbiting it. He found that there were sun spots on it.

About fifty years ago, the Polish astronomer Copernicus declared that the Earth was a planet but could not prove it. Galileo realized that Copernicus was right. Galileo taught it at the university which caused many confusions and he got upset with the church.

The Inquisition asked him to declare that the Earth does not revolve around the Sun. He knelt down and made a public announcement about it, but as soon as he got up from his knees, he whispered to himself, "But still it shakes".

The court ordered him not to teach these evil thoughts any more. But Galileo did not obey the orders of the Church for long. He was tried again as an unbeliever. After a long trial, he was sent to jail, given his age, he was sent home after 22 days.

लगभग पचास साल पहले, पोलिश खगोलशास्त्री कोपरनिकस ने घोषणा की थी कि पृथ्वी एक ग्रह है लेकिन वह इसे साबित नहीं कर सके। गैलीलियो ने महसूस किया कि कॉपरनिकस सही था। गैलीलियो ने इसे विश्वविद्यालय में पढ़ाया जिससे कई भ्रम पैदा हुए और वह चर्च से परेशान हो गया।

धर्माधिकरण ने उसे यह घोषित करने के लिए कहा कि पृथ्वी सूर्य के चारों ओर नहीं घूमती है। उन्होंने घुटने टेके और इस बारे में एक सार्वजनिक घोषणा की, लेकिन जैसे ही वह अपने घुटनों से उठे, उन्होंने खुद से फुसफुसाया, "लेकिन फिर भी यह हिलता है"।
