गौतम बुद्ध का जन्म 563 ईसा पूर्व में एक शाही परिवार में हुआ था। 483 ई.पू. में उनकी मृत्यु हो गई। उन्हें राजकुमार सिद्धार्थ गौतम के नाम से जाना जाता था। बारह साल की उम्र में उन्हें स्कूली शिक्षा के लिए भेज दिया गया था। उन्होंने सभी पवित्र हिंदू शास्त्रों का अध्ययन किया। सोलह वर्ष की आयु में, उन्होंने एक राजकुमारी से विवाह किया, उनका एक बेटा था और वह दस साल तक उचित रॉयल्टी के रूप में रहे।

पच्चीस वर्ष की आयु में, वह एक बीमार व्यक्ति, एक वृद्ध व्यक्ति, एक अंतिम संस्कार जुलूस और अंत में एक भिक्षु से भीख मांगते हुए मिला। इन नजारों ने उन्हें इतना प्रभावित किया कि उन्होंने अपने परिवार को छोड़ने का फैसला कर लिया।

वह तुरंत एक भिखारी बन गया और अपने द्वारा देखे गए दुखों के बारे में ज्ञान प्राप्त करने के लिए दुनिया में चला गया। वह सात साल तक ज्ञान और सच्चाई की तलाश में भटकता रहा। अंत में, वह एक पीपल के पेड़ के नीचे बैठ गया जहाँ उसने आत्मज्ञान आने तक रहने की कसम खाई।

सात दिनों के बाद प्रबुद्ध, उन्होंने पेड़ का नाम बदलकर 'बोधि वृक्ष' कर दिया। 'बोधि वृक्ष' का अर्थ है ज्ञान का वृक्ष। उन्हें बुद्ध के रूप में जाना जाने लगा जिसका अर्थ है 'ज्ञानोदय' या 'जागृत'। उन्होंने पढ़ाना और अपनी नई समझ को साझा करना शुरू किया। उन्होंने अपना पहला उपदेश बनारस में दिया था।

बनारस में उनका पहला उपदेश एक अचूक प्रकार की पीड़ा यानी मृत्यु के बारे में उनके ज्ञान को दर्शाता है। यहां बुद्ध मृत्यु की सार्वभौमिकता के बारे में बताते हैं जो अपरिहार्य है और इससे बचा नहीं जा सकता है।

एक बार किसा गोतमी का इकलौता पुत्र मर गया, वह चाहती थी कि वह जीवित रहे। किसी की सलाह पर उसने बुद्ध के पास एक दवा देने का अनुरोध किया ताकि उसका इकलौता बेटा फिर से जीवित हो सके। एक गहन विचार के बाद, बुद्ध ने उसे एक मुट्ठी राई लाने को कहा।

परन्तु वह उस घर से हो, जहां किसी की मृत्यु न हुई हो। किसा गोतमी घर-घर जाकर सरसों-बीज लेने गई। उन्हें हर घर में सरसों के दाने मिले लेकिन उन्हें ऐसा घर नहीं मिला, जहां किसी की मौत न हुई हो। अब उसने महसूस किया कि मृत्यु सभी के लिए सामान्य है।

बुद्ध ने अपने उपदेश में कहा कि हमारा जीवन संक्षिप्त है। यह दर्द के साथ मिलाया जाता है। जन्म के बाद मरना ही पड़ता है। मौत किसी को नहीं बख्शती। हमें शोक नहीं करना चाहिए क्योंकि शोक करने से मन को शांति नहीं मिल सकती। बल्कि इससे शरीर में दर्द होता है। शांति चाहने वालों को शोक या शिकायत नहीं करनी चाहिए। जिन्होंने सभी दुखों पर विजय प्राप्त कर ली है, वे दुखों से मुक्त हो जाते हैं और धन्य हो जाते हैं। वे शांति से रहेंगे।

Gautam Buddha was born in a royal family in 563 BC. 483 BC He died in He was known as Prince Siddhartha Gautama. At the age of twelve he was sent to school. He studied all the sacred Hindu scriptures. At the age of sixteen, he married a princess, had a son and lived as proper royalty for ten years.

At the age of twenty-five, he met a sick man, an old man, a funeral procession and finally a monk begging. These scenes impressed him so much that he decided to leave his family.

He immediately became a beggar and went out into the world to gain knowledge about the miseries he had witnessed. For seven years he wandered in search of knowledge and truth. Finally, he sat down under a peepal tree where he vowed to stay till enlightenment came.

Enlightened after seven days, he changed the name of the tree to 'Bodhi Tree'. The meaning of 'Bodhi tree' is the tree of knowledge. He came to be known as Buddha which means 'enlightenment' or 'awakened'. He began to teach and share his newfound understanding. He gave his first sermon in Banaras.

His first sermon in Banaras reflects his knowledge of an infallible type of suffering, that is, death. Here the Buddha explains the universality of death which is inevitable and cannot be avoided.

Once the only son of Kisa Gotami died, she wanted him to live. On the advice of someone, he requested the Buddha to give a medicine so that his only son could be revived. After a deep thought, the Buddha asked him to bring a handful of mustard seeds.

But it should be from a house where no one has died. Kisa Gotami went from house to house to collect mustard seeds. They found mustard seeds in every house, but they could not find a house where no one had died. Now he realized that death is common to all.

Buddha said in his sermon that our life is short. It is mixed with pain. One has to die after birth. Death spares no one. We should not grieve because mourning cannot bring peace to the mind. Rather it causes pain in the body. Peace-seekers should not grieve or grieve. Those who have conquered all sorrows are freed from sorrows and become blessed. They will live in peace.
