इस अवसर पर, मंडेला याद करते हैं कि कैसे अपनी ही भूमि में काले रंग के लोगों के खिलाफ नस्लीय वर्चस्व की व्यवस्था बनाई गई थी। वह इसे सबसे अमानवीय व्यवस्था कहते हैं। व्यवस्था को उलटने से वह खुश हैं।

उन्होंने एक ऐसी प्रणाली का वादा किया जहां सभी लोगों के अधिकारों और स्वतंत्रता को मान्यता दी जाएगी, चाहे उनकी त्वचा का रंग कुछ भी हो। वह उन सभी नेताओं को याद करते हैं जिन्होंने दमन के युग को समाप्त करने के लिए अपने प्राणों की आहुति दे दी। उन्हें खेद है कि वे यह देखने के लिए जीवित नहीं हैं कि उनके बलिदान ने क्या हासिल किया।

कोई भी दूसरों से नफरत करने के लिए पैदा नहीं हुआ है। अगर हम नफरत करना सीख सकते हैं, तो हम प्यार करना भी सीख सकते हैं। हमें यही करना चाहिए। हमें प्यार करना सीखना चाहिए।

मंडेला जुड़वां दायित्वों के बारे में बात करते हैं - अपने परिवार, अपने माता-पिता, अपनी पत्नी और बच्चों के प्रति एक दायित्व; और उसका अपने लोगों, अपने समुदाय, अपने देश के प्रति दायित्व है। वह इस बात पर जोर देते हैं कि एक सभ्य समाज में हम में से प्रत्येक को इन दो दायित्वों को पूरा करना चाहिए।

This quote is taken from Nelson Mandela's autobiography 'Long Walk to Freedom'. In this short excerpt, Mandela talks about a historic occasion, the 'opening'.

It was 10 May when a massive gathering of international leaders gathered in Pretoria to mark the end of white supremacy. It was the happy establishment of South Africa's first democratic non-racial government.

Mr. de Klerk and Mr. Thabo Mbeki were sworn in as the second and first Vice Presidents respectively. After that Nelson Mandela resolved to abide by the constitution. He devoted himself for the betterment of his people.

The swearing-in ceremony was followed by a spectacular display by the Jet, Defense and Police forces. Eventually the V-shaped Impala jet left the black, red, green, blue and gold smoke trail of the new South African flag.

On this occasion, Mandela recalls how a system of racial domination was created against black people in his own land. He calls it the most inhuman system. He is happy that the system is reversed.

He promised a system where the rights and freedoms of all people would be recognized, regardless of the color of their skin. He remembers all the leaders who sacrificed their lives to end the era of oppression. They regret that they do not live to see what their sacrifices achieved.

He writes that the era of oppression and brutality caused a deep and lasting wound in his country but at the same time produced people of extraordinary courage and wisdom. Such people are the biggest wealth of the country.

He thanked the heroes who taught him that courage is not the absence of fear, but victory over it. The brave is not the one who is not afraid, but the one who conquers that fear.

No one is born to hate others. If we can learn to hate, we can learn to love too. This is what we should do. We must learn to love.

Mandela talks about twin obligations – an obligation towards his family, his parents, his wife and children; And he has an obligation towards his people, his community, his country. He emphasizes that in a civilized society each of us must fulfill these two obligations.

He regrets that no one in South Africa could fulfill these obligations during the period of repression. But now he promises that every citizen will find an environment where he will fulfill his twin obligations. He wished his people respect, self-respect and freedom to live without fear.
