लेंचो एक मेहनती किसान था। उनका घर घाटी में एक नीची पहाड़ी पर स्थित था। इस ऊंचाई से, वह अपनी फसलों और नदी को बहते हुए देख सकता था। वह अच्छी फसल की उम्मीद कर रहा था लेकिन धरती को बारिश की जरूरत थी। सुबह से लेंचो आसमान की तरफ देख रहा था। रात के खाने के समय, उसने अपनी पत्नी से कहा कि वे बारिश करने जा रहे हैं।

भोजन के दौरान बारिश की बड़ी-बड़ी बूंदें गिरने लगीं। हवा ताजी और मीठी थी। वह अपने शरीर पर बारिश को महसूस करने के लिए बाहर आया था। वह खुश हो गया। उसने उन्हें नए सिक्के कहा। बहुत जल्द उसका खेत बारिश से भर गया। लेकिन अचानक बारिश बड़े ओलावृष्टि में बदल गई।

एक घंटे तक जय-जयकार हुई। उनके बगीचे, घर, पहाड़ी, खेत में भारी ओले पड़े थे। ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे यह नमक से ढका हो। पेड़ों पर एक पत्ता भी नहीं था। उनकी कॉम पूरी तरह से माइनिंग थी। लेंचो की आत्मा दुख से भर गई। उन्होंने कहा कि वे सभी भूखे रहेंगे।

लेंचो मन ही मन बहुत व्याकुल था। उन्होंने कहा कि उनकी मदद करने वाला कोई नहीं है। घाटी के सभी निवासियों की एक ही आशा थी। यह भगवान से मदद थी। लेंचो ने कहा, 'वे यही कहते हैं, कोई भूखा नहीं मरता'।

पूरी रात, लैंचो ने केवल अपनी एक आशा, यानी ईश्वर की सहायता के बारे में सोचा। उनका मानना था, 'भगवान की आंखें सब कुछ देखती हैं, यहां तक कि किसी के विवेक में भी क्या है। वह उन्हें भूख से मरने नहीं देते थे।'

अगले रविवार लेंचो डाकघर गया। उन्होंने भगवान को एक पत्र लिखा। उन्होंने लिखा, 'भगवान, अगर आपने मेरी मदद नहीं की तो मैं और मेरा परिवार इस साल भूखे रह जाएंगे। मुझे अपना खेत फिर से बोने और फसल आने तक जीने के लिए सौ पेसो चाहिए। ओलावृष्टि ने सब कुछ तबाह कर दिया है।'

उन्होंने भगवान को पत्र संबोधित किया। उसने लिफाफे पर एक मोहर चिपका दी और उसे मेल बॉक्स में डाल दिया।

एक डाकिये को यह चिट्ठी मिली और वह पता देखकर मन ही मन हँस पड़ा। उसने पोस्टमास्टर को दिखाया। पोस्टमास्टर बहुत मिलनसार व्यक्ति थे। पत्र देखते ही वह गंभीर हो गया। उन्होंने लेखक के ईश्वर में महान विश्वास के बारे में टिप्पणी की।

लेखक का विश्वास न डगमगाने के लिए डाकपाल ने पत्र का उत्तर देने का निश्चय किया। उन्होंने अपने कर्मचारियों और दोस्तों से पैसे एकत्र किए। उन्होंने अपने वेतन का कुछ हिस्सा दिया। लेकिन वह सौ पेसो जमा नहीं कर सका। यह आधे से थोड़ा अधिक था।

इसलिए उसने पैसे को एक लिफाफे में डाल दिया और लेंचो को संबोधित किया। उन्होंने एक हस्ताक्षर 'भगवान' रखा। अगले रविवार को लेंचो कुछ पहले पोस्ट ऑफिस पहुंचा। उसने अपना पत्र मांगा। डाकिया ने उसे पत्र दिया। पोस्टमास्टर सब कुछ देख रहा था।

Lencho was a hardworking farmer. His house was situated on a low hill in the valley. From this height, he could see his crops and the river flowing. He was expecting a good harvest but the earth needed rain. Lencho had been looking at the sky since morning. At dinner time, he told his wife that they were going to rain.

Big drops of rain started falling during the meal. The air was fresh and sweet. He came out to feel the rain on his body. He was happy. He called them new coins. Very soon his field was filled with rain. But suddenly the rain turned into a big hailstorm.

There was cheering for an hour. There was heavy hail in his garden, house, hill, field. It looked like it was covered with salt. There was not even a leaf on the trees. His com was completely mining. Lencho's soul was filled with sorrow. He said that they would all go hungry.

Lencho was very disturbed in his mind. He said that there is no one to help him. All the inhabitants of the valley had only one hope. It was a help from God. 'That's what they say, no one starves,' said Lencho.

All night, Lencho thought only of his one hope, the help of God. He believed, 'God's eyes see everything, even what is in one's conscience. He would not let them die of hunger.'

The next Sunday Lencho went to the post office. He wrote a letter to God. He wrote, 'God, if you don't help me, my family and I will starve this year. I need a hundred pesos to re-sow my field and live till the harvest. The hailstorm has destroyed everything.'

He addressed the letter to God. He stuck a stamp on the envelope and put it in the mail box.

A postman got this letter and on seeing that address, he laughed in his heart. He showed it to the postmaster. The postmaster was a very friendly person. On seeing the letter, he became serious. He remarked about the author's great belief in God.

In order not to shake the confidence of the author, the postmaster decided to reply to the letter. He collected money from his employees and friends. He gave part of his salary. But he could not deposit hundred pesos. It was a little over half that.

So he put the money in an envelope and addressed it to Lencho. He put a sign 'Lord'. The next Sunday, Lencho reached the post office a little earlier. He asked for his letter. The postman gave him the letter. The postmaster was watching everything.

Lencho was confident of God's help. He immediately opened the letter and found the money. But he got annoyed when he got less money. He remarked that God could not have made such a mistake of sending him less money. Immediately Lencho went to the window.

He wrote a letter, put a stamp and put it in the mail box. The postmaster went to open it. He read the letter. He said, 'God, only seventy pesos have reached me. Don't send the rest by post because the post office workers are a bunch of crooks.
