लालच, हिंसा, पाखंड, बेईमानी, चालाकी और चीजों के मालिक होने की लालसा जैसी मानवीय मूर्खताएं कवि को रुग्ण लगती हैं।

वह जानवरों के बीच रहने का मन करता है क्योंकि वे शांत और आत्मनिर्भर होते हैं। कवि जानवरों को शांतिप्रिय, शिकायत न करने वाला, गैर-कम्फ़र्टेबल और पूरी तरह से आत्मसंतुष्ट पाता है। वे न तो अपनी परिस्थितियों के लिए बड़बड़ाते हैं और न ही अपने पापों के लिए रोते हैं।

वे ईश्वर के प्रति कर्तव्य की चर्चा कर कवि को घृणा का अनुभव नहीं कराते। मनुष्य के विपरीत, जानवर न तो असंतुष्ट रहते हैं और न ही भौतिकवादी चीजों को इकट्ठा करने या रखने के किसी उन्माद से पीड़ित होते हैं। वे दूसरों के सामने घुटने टेकने या हजारों साल पहले चले गए लोगों के लिए विलाप करने में विश्वास नहीं करते हैं।

कवि उन्हें न तो सम्मानित पाता है और न ही दुखी। जानवर कवि के साथ अपना रिश्ता दिखाते हैं और वह स्वीकार करता है। इन गुणों के साथ-साथ, जानवरों में आपसी प्रेम और सौहार्दपूर्ण संबंध के प्रतीक बने रहते हैं जो कवि को आश्चर्यचकित करते हैं कि कैसे जानवरों ने गुणों को बरकरार रखा जबकि कवि यानी मानव जाति ने लापरवाही से उन्हें बहुत पीछे छोड़ दिया।

The poem 'Animals' by the famous American poet Walt Whitman is a very thought provoking poem. In this poem, the poet talks about his desire to be in the company of animals.

Human idiosyncrasies like greed, violence, hypocrisy, dishonesty, cunning and the desire to own things seem morbid to the poet.

He likes to live among animals because they are calm and self-sufficient. The poet finds animals to be peace-loving, non-complaining, non-comfortable and completely complacent. They neither grumble for their circumstances nor cry for their sins.

They do not make the poet feel hatred by discussing the duty towards God. Unlike humans, animals neither remain unsatisfied nor suffer from any frenzy of collecting or possessing materialistic things. They do not believe in kneeling before others or mourning for people who have gone thousands of years ago.

The poet finds him neither honored nor sad. The animals show their relationship with the poet and he accepts. Along with these qualities, the animals remain symbols of mutual love and cordial relationship which makes the poet wonder how the animals retained the qualities while the poet i.e. mankind carelessly left them far behind.
