वल्ली या वल्लियमाई आठ साल की तमिल लड़की थी। वह चीजों को लेकर बहुत उत्सुक थी। उसका कोई सहपाठी नहीं था। इसलिए अपने घर के दरवाजे पर खड़ा होना उसका पसंदीदा शगल बन गया था। उसने देखा कि बाहर गली में क्या हो रहा है। इस प्रकार उसे कई नए असामान्य अनुभव प्राप्त हुए। लेकिन वह बस की सवारी से बहुत मोहक थी। यह उसके लिए एक अंतहीन खुशी थी।

उसने उसे बढ़िया मैडम कहा और एक सीट की तरफ इशारा किया। यह दिन का सुस्त समय था। इसलिए बस में बहुत कम यात्री यात्रा कर रहे थे। फिर कंडक्टर ने उससे पूछा कि क्या वे बस स्टार्ट कर सकते हैं। सभी यात्री कंडक्टर और वल्ली की तरफ देख रहे थे।
सीटी सुनते ही बस स्टार्ट हो गई। नई बस थी। इसमें सफेद पर हरी धारियों की बारीक पेंटिंग थी। सीटें नरम और शानदार थीं। वैसे वल्ली हर चीज का आनंद अपनी ही नजरों से ले रही थी। रास्ता संकरा था। एक तरफ नहर थी।
इसके आगे खजूर के पेड़, घास के मैदान, पहाड़, आकाश और हरे भरे खेत थे। पूरा नजारा देखने के लिए वह सीट पर खड़ी हो गईं। वल्ली को सब कुछ बहुत अच्छा लग रहा था। एक बूढ़ा आदमी चिल्लाया और वल्ली को 'बच्चा' कहा। उसने उसे बैठने के लिए कहा।
वल्ली केवल एक ही बुलाए जाने के लिए हैरान था। गुस्से में उसने कंडक्टर की तरफ देखा और टिकट की मांग की। कंडक्टर ने एक टिकट मुक्का मारा और उसे दे दिया। जब उसने एक सीट के लिए भुगतान किया तो उसने उसे खड़े न होने के लिए कहा। बस रुक गई। कुछ यात्री चढ़ गए। वल्ली अपनी सीट पर बैठ गई, कहीं ऐसा न हो कि कोई यात्री उस पर बैठ जाए।
उसी समय एक बुजुर्ग महिला बस में चढ़ गई। वह वल्ली के पास बैठ गई। उसने उससे सवाल किया कि क्या वह बिल्कुल अकेली है। वल्ली उसे पसंद नहीं करती थी। उसके कान में बड़े-बड़े छेद थे। झुमके बहुत बदसूरत थे। वह सुपारी चबा रही थी। वल्ली को डर था कि कहीं उसका रस कहीं गिर न जाए।
उसने फिर वल्ली से पूछताछ की। बदले में वल्ली ने करारा जवाब दिया और उसे अपने काम पर ध्यान देने को कहा। लेकिन बुढ़िया अपनी बात पर कायम रही। उसने घर का नंबर, कस्बा और गली जानने की कोशिश की कि वह कहां जा रही है। वल्ली बहुत परेशान था। उसने उससे कहा कि वह उसके बारे में परेशान न हो। फिर वल्ली ने मुँह फेर लिया और खिड़की से बाहर देखने लगा। यह उनकी पहली यात्रा थी। उसने इसकी बहुत अच्छी योजना बनाई थी। उसने अपने रास्ते में आने वाले अपने सभी आवारा सिक्कों को बचा लिया था।
उसने खिलौने और गुब्बारे आदि खरीदने के प्रलोभन का विरोध किया। गाँव के मेले में भी उसने खुद को नियंत्रित किया कि मीरा गो राउंड में सवारी का आनंद न लें। इस प्रकार उसने अपनी यात्रा के लिए पर्याप्त धन एकत्र कर लिया था। उसकी अगली समस्या घर से बाहर निकलने की थी। वह जानती थी कि उसकी मां रोज दोपहर के भोजन के बाद सोती थी।

ट्रेन दूर से एक कण की तरह लग रही थी। ट्रेन अत्यंत गर्जना और खड़खड़ाहट के साथ गुजरी। इसने बस को भी हिला दिया। फिर बस एक व्यस्त शॉपिंग स्ट्रीट से गुज़री और एक चौड़े रास्ते पर आ गई। कपड़ों के प्रदर्शन और भारी भीड़ को देखकर वल्ली मोहित और खुश हो गई।
वह सब कुछ देख रही थी। यह बस का अंतिम गंतव्य था। अब सभी यात्री बस से उतर गए। वल्ली बस में वहीं रह गई। कंडक्टर ने पूछा कि क्या वह बस से उतरने के लिए तैयार नहीं है। वल्ली ने उत्तर दिया कि वह उसी बस से लौटेगी और उसने कंडक्टर को तीस सिक्के दिए।
उसे आश्चर्य हुआ और उसने पूछा कि मामला क्या है। वल्ली ने उत्तर दिया कि वह केवल बस में सवारी करना चाहती है और कुछ नहीं। कंडक्टर बहुत खुश हुआ। उसने उससे अनुरोध किया कि वह जाकर बस के चलने तक नज़ारों को देखें। लेकिन वल्ली ने जवाब दिया कि वह बहुत डरी हुई है। वह तब तक बैठी रही जब तक बस फिर से शुरू नहीं हो गई

और अपना किराया लाना न भूलें”। वल्ली हँसी और दौड़ती हुई सीधे अपने घर चली गई। जब वल्ली अपने घर में दाखिल हुई, तो उसने देखा कि उसकी माँ अपनी एक मौसी से बात कर रही है। वह साउथ स्ट्रीट की रहने वाली थी। वह एक बकबक थी। एक बार बात करने के बाद उसका मुंह कभी बंद नहीं हुआ। उसने वल्ली से पूछा कि वह कहाँ थी।

He saw what was happening outside in the street. Thus he got many new unusual experiences. But she was very fascinated by the bus ride. It was an endless joy for him.
A bus ran between his village and the nearest town at an interval of one hour. He saw passengers getting on or off the bus, he heard conversations between his neighbors and people who use the bus regularly.
More often, he asked them some questions. In a way he had collected some details about the bus journey. The final destination of the bus was a city. It was about six miles away from his village. One way fare was thirty paise.
The journey to the city took forty five minutes. So he planned to take an afternoon bus so that he could come back one afternoon at about two forty five. It was a nice spring day. The afternoon bus was about to leave the village.
Valli said 'Just stop! just stop! The speed of the bus slowed down and the conductor peeped outside. He called her to hurry. Standing outside the bus, Valli told that he had to go to the city. She showed some coins and got on the bus. The conductor was a cheerful fellow.
He called her a fine ma'am and pointed to a seat. It was a dull time of day. So very few passengers were traveling in the bus. Then the conductor asked him if he could start the bus. All the passengers were looking towards the conductor and Valli.
On hearing the whistle, the bus started. There was a new bus. It had fine paintings of green stripes on white. The seats were soft and luxurious. Well, Valli was enjoying everything through her own eyes. The road was narrow. There was a canal on one side.
Next to it were palm trees, meadows, mountains, sky and green fields. She stood on the seat to see the full view. Everything seemed great to Valli. An old man shouted and called Valli 'the child'. He asked her to sit.
Valli was shocked to be called the only one. Angrily, he looked at the conductor and demanded a ticket. The conductor punched a ticket and gave it to him. When he paid for a seat he asked her not to stand. The bus stopped. Some passengers boarded. Valli sat down on her seat, lest any passenger would sit on it.
At the same time an elderly woman boarded the bus. She sat down beside Valli. He asked her if she was all alone. Valli did not like him. He had big holes in his ear. The earrings were very ugly. She was chewing betel nut. Valli was afraid that his juice might spill over.
He again interrogated Valli. In return Valli gave a befitting reply and asked him to concentrate on his work. But the old lady stood her ground. She tried to know the house number, town and street where she was going. Valli was very upset. He told her not to be upset about him. Then Valli turned his face and looked out the window. This was his first visit. He had planned it very well. He had saved all his stray coins that came in his way.
He resisted the temptation to buy toys and balloons etc. Even in the village fair he controlled himself not to enjoy the ride in the merry go round. Thus he had collected enough money for his journey. His next problem was getting out of the house. She knew that her mother used to sleep every day after lunch.
Valli decided to use these hours for his journey. Often she used these hours for her excursions. The bus was moving in a landscape. Everything seemed to be going fast. But it was passing smoothly leaving all the obstacles behind safely. Valli was happy. He clapped happily.
A young cow was running fast in front of the bus. The driver sounded the horn loudly. But the animal became more and more frightened. Galloped in front of the bus. It was fun for Valli. At last the cow went off the road. The bus came to a railroad crossing.
The train looked like a particle from afar. The train passed with extreme roar and rattle. It shook the bus too. Then the bus passed through a busy shopping street and came to a wide road. Valli was fascinated and delighted to see the display of clothes and the huge crowd.
She was watching everything. This was the final destination of the bus. Now all the passengers got off the bus. Valli stayed there in the bus. The conductor asked if he was not ready to get off the bus. Valli replied that she would return by the same bus and gave thirty coins to the conductor.
He was surprised and asked what was the matter. Valli replied that she only wanted to ride in the bus and nothing else. The conductor was overjoyed. He requested her to go and watch the sights till the bus leaves. But Valli replied that she was very scared. she sat until the bus started again
its journey. He got the ticket. The same wonderful sight was in front of his eyes.
Then suddenly he saw a young cow dead on the side of the road. He asked the conductor if it was the same cow. The conductor shook his head. Now she was surrounded by sadness. His memory haunted her. He thought it was a cute animal sometime back but lost all its charm.
She didn't want to look out the window anymore. She was glued to her seat. It was three or forty when the bus reached his village. She stood up and asked to meet the conductor again. in the conductor
smiled and replied, 'Ma'am, whenever you feel like taking a bus ride, come and join us.
And don't forget to bring your rent'. Valli laughed and ran straight to her house. When Valli entered her house, she saw her mother talking to one of her aunts. She was a resident of South Street. She was a bastard. He never closed his mouth once he spoke. He asked Valli where she was.
Valli just smiled. Valli told that so many things were happening without his knowledge. Her aunt was surprised and said that Valli was talking like an older woman.
