यह कहानी भोली नाम की एक साधारण गाँव की लड़की की है। उनका असली नाम सुलेखा था। लेकिन भाग्य ने उसे धोखा दिया और जब वह दस महीने की थी, तब वह खाट से गिर गई और उसके दिमाग का कुछ हिस्सा क्षतिग्रस्त हो गया। नतीजतन, वह पांच साल की उम्र के बाद ही भाषण उठा सकती थी, लेकिन वह हकलाती रही।

बाद में, जब वह दो साल की थी, तो उसे चेचक का दौरा पड़ा, जिससे उसके पूरे शरीर पर खाली धब्बे रह गए। दूसरे बच्चे अक्सर उसका मजाक उड़ाते थे और उसकी नकल करते थे। इसलिए वह बहुत कम बात करती थी।

नंबरदार रामलाल के सात बच्चे हैं- तीन बेटे और चार बेटियां। भोली सबसे छोटा था। भोली को छोड़कर अन्य सभी स्वस्थ और मजबूत थे। भोली सात साल के थे जब उनके गांव में एक प्राथमिक विद्यालय खुला।

तहसीलदार स्कूल का उद्घाटन समारोह करने पहुंचे। उन्होंने रामलाल से कहा कि वह राजस्व अधिकारी और गांव में सरकार के प्रतिनिधि के रूप में अपनी बेटी को स्कूल भेजें और गांव वालों के सामने एक मिसाल कायम करें.

इस बारे में जब उसने अपनी पत्नी से बात की तो उसकी पत्नी नहीं मानी। फिर भी उसने भोली को स्कूल भेजने का फैसला किया।

अगले दिन, भोली को स्नान कराया गया, और एक नया वस्त्र पहनाया गया। उसकी माँ उसके बाल बनाती है और फिर उसे स्कूल भेज दिया जाता है। जब उसके पिता ने उसे स्कूल में छोड़ दिया, तो वह कक्षा में एक कॉमरेड में बैठ गई। जब उसकी शिक्षिका ने उसका नाम पूछा तो वह हकलाने लगी और बच्चे हँसने लगे।

इस पर भोली रोने लगी। लेकिन शिक्षक की आवाज नरम और सुखदायक थी। इसने उसे बहुत प्रोत्साहित किया और अंत में वह अपना पूरा नाम बता सकी। तब शिक्षिका ने उससे कहा कि अगर वह रोज स्कूल आएगी तो वह बिना हकलाए बोलेगी और एक दिन वह गांव की सबसे ज्यादा पढ़ी-लिखी लड़की बनेगी।

फिर कोई उस पर हंसने की हिम्मत नहीं करेगा। तब वे उसकी बात ध्यान से सुनेंगे।

साल बीत गए और गाँव अब एक छोटे से शहर में बदल गया। एक रात रामलाल ने अपनी पत्नी से पड़ोस के गाँव के एक किराना व्यापारी बिशम्बर द्वारा किए गए प्रस्ताव के बारे में सलाह ली। उनकी पत्नी ने तुरंत इसके लिए हामी भर दी। यह बातचीत भोली भी सुन रही थी। उसकी शादी का दिन आया।

जब दूल्हा उसे माला पहनाने ही वाला था कि किसी महिला ने उसे अपना चेहरा दिखाते हुए अपना घूंघट नीचे खींच लिया। दूल्हे ने तुरंत उसके चेहरे पर एक नज़र डाली और उसके चेहरे पर चेचक के निशान देखे। इस पर उसने रामलाल से उस बदसूरत लड़की से शादी करने के लिए दहेज के रूप में पांच हजार रुपये देने को कहा।

कुछ बहस के बाद रामलाल ने पैसे बिशम्बर को सौंप दिए। लेकिन भोली ने अपने पिता से उससे पैसे वापस लेने को कहा क्योंकि वह उस बूढ़े लंगड़े और लालची व्यक्ति से शादी नहीं करना चाहती थी। हर कोई हैरान था क्योंकि भोली बिल्कुल नहीं हकला रहा था। दूल्हा अपनी बरात लेकर वापस चला गया।

लज्जा और शोक के कारण रमाला अपना सिर नहीं उठा सका। उसने भोली से कहा कि अब कोई उससे शादी नहीं करेगा। लेकिन भोली ने उससे कहा कि वह बुढ़ापे में उसके माता-पिता की सेवा करेगी और उसी स्कूल में पढ़ाएगी जहां उसने बहुत कुछ सीखा था।

This story is about a simple village girl named Bholi. Her real name was Sulekha. But fate betrayed her and when she was ten months old, she fell from the cot and damaged some part of her brain. As a result, she could pick up speech only after the age of five, but she continued to stutter.

Later, when she was two years old, she suffered a smallpox attack, which left blank spots all over her body. Other children often made fun of him and imitated him. That's why she talked very little.

Numberdar Ramlal has seven children - three sons and four daughters. Bholi was the youngest. Except Bholi all others were healthy and strong. Bholi was seven years old when a primary school opened in his village.

Tehsildar reached to inaugurate the school. He asked Ramlal to send his daughter to school as a revenue officer and representative of the government in the village and set an example in front of the villagers.

When he talked to his wife about this, his wife did not agree. Still he decided to send Bholi to school.

The next day, Bholi was bathed, and put on a new robe. His mother does his hair and then he is sent to school. When her father dropped her off at school, she sat down with a comrade in the class. When her teacher asked her name, she stammered and the children laughed.

Bholi started crying on this. But the teacher's voice was soft and soothing. This greatly encouraged her and she was finally able to reveal her full name. Then the teacher told her that if she would come to school every day, she would speak without stammer and one day she would become the most educated girl in the village.

Then no one would dare to laugh at him. Then they will listen carefully to him.

Years passed and the village now turned into a small town. One night Ramlal consulted his wife about a proposal made by Bishamber, a grocer from a neighboring village. His wife immediately agreed to it. This conversation was also listening to the naive. His wedding day came.

When the groom was about to garland her, a woman pulled her veil down showing her her face. The groom immediately took a look at her face and saw smallpox marks on her face. On this he asked Ramlal to give five thousand rupees as dowry to marry that ugly girl.

After some debate, Ramlal handed over the money to Bishamber. But Bholi asked her father to take back the money from her as she did not want to marry that old lame and greedy man. Everyone was surprised as Bholi was not stammering at all. The groom took his wedding procession and went back.

Because of shame and grief, Ramala could not raise her head. He told Bholi that now no one will marry her. But Bholi told her that she would serve her parents in old age and would teach in the same school where she had learned a lot.
