'फायर एंड आइस' कविता रॉबर्ट फ्रॉस्ट द्वारा रचित है। कवि इस दुनिया के अंत के बारे में दो अलग-अलग मान्यताओं के बारे में बात करता है। उनका कहना है कि वह उन लोगों के पक्ष में हैं जो कहते हैं कि यह दुनिया आग में समाप्त हो जाएगी क्योंकि उन्होंने अनियंत्रित और अटूट इच्छाओं का प्रभाव और परिणाम देखा है।

वह मनुष्य की इच्छाओं को अपने स्वभाव में अग्नि के समान पाता है। दूसरी ओर, दूसरी मान्यता बताती है कि इस दुनिया को नष्ट करने के लिए बर्फ पर्याप्त है और कवि बर्फ की प्रकृति की तुलना घृणा से करता है।

जिस प्रकार बर्फ लंबे समय तक संपर्क में रहने से शरीर के किसी अंग को सुन्न कर सकती है, उसी प्रकार घृणा भी हमारे मन और विचारों को सुन्न कर सकती है और हमें असंवेदनशील और क्रूर बना सकती है।

कविता प्रतीकात्मक रूप से लिखी गई है। कवि का कहना है कि इस दुनिया के अंत के बारे में मुख्य रूप से दो मत हैं। एक आग से और दूसरा बर्फ से। 'अग्नि' और 'बर्फ' प्रतीकों का प्रयोग क्रमशः इच्छा और घृणा जैसी मानवीय भावनाओं के लिए किया गया है।

जिस प्रकार आग बहुत तेजी से फैलती है और कुछ ही समय में महान विनाश का कारण बन सकती है, उसी तरह हमारी इच्छाएं भी बहुत विनाशकारी साबित हो सकती हैं यदि वे नियंत्रण से बाहर हो जाएं। नफरत बर्फ की तरह धीमी गति से विनाश का कारण बनती है लेकिन यह बहुत हानिकारक भी होती है।

He finds human desires like fire in his nature. On the other hand, the second belief states that snow is enough to destroy this world and the poet compares the nature of snow to hatred.

Just as ice can numb any part of the body with prolonged exposure, hatred can also numb our mind and thoughts and make us insensitive and cruel.

The poem is written symbolically. The poet says that there are mainly two opinions about the end of this world. One with fire and the other with ice. The symbols 'fire' and 'ice' have been used for human emotions such as desire and hatred respectively.

Just as fire spreads very fast and can cause great destruction in no time, our desires can also prove to be very destructive if they get out of control. Hate causes destruction as slow as snow but it is also very harmful.
