अनिल युवा लेखक थे। वह बहुत ही लापरवाही से अपना जीवन व्यतीत कर रहा था। वह पत्रिकाओं के लिए लिख रहा था और अपना जीवन चलाने के लिए पैसे कमा रहा था। एक दिन अनिल कुश्ती का मैच देख रहा था। हरि अनजान व्यक्ति को मित्र बनाना बखूबी जानते थे। उन्होंने व्यक्ति की चापलूसी करने के लिए एक पुराने फॉर्मूले का इस्तेमाल किया। हरि अनिल के साथ रहा।

अनिल ने उससे वादा किया कि वह उसे नंबर लिखना और जोड़ना सिखाएगा। उन्होंने उसे स्वादिष्ट खाना बनाना भी सिखाया। दैनिक हरि सिंह दैनिक जरूरतों को खरीदने के लिए गया और उसे प्रतिदिन एक रुपये का लाभ हुआ। अनिल को यह पता था लेकिन उसे कोई आपत्ति नहीं थी। दोनों खुशी-खुशी साथ रह रहे थे।

एक महीना बीत गया, हरि सिंह ने अपना व्यवसाय नहीं किया। एक दिन उसने देखा कि अनिल नोटों का बंडल लेकर आया है। उसने उन्हें गद्दे के नीचे रखने के लिए देखा। जैसे ही हरि ने नोटों की गठरी देखी, उसके मन में उसकी बुरी आत्मा जाग गई और उसने उस रात अनिल को लूटने का फैसला किया। खाना खाने के बाद अनिल चैन की नींद सो गया।

हरि को नींद नहीं आई, वह जाग गया। वह रेंगकर बिस्तर पर गया और गद्दे के नीचे अपना हाथ रख दिया। उसे नोट मिले और वह सड़क पर भाग गया। हरि सिंह ने निश्चय किया कि वह सीधे रेलवे स्टेशन जायेंगे और लखनऊ एक्सप्रेस पकड़ेंगे।

उसने सोचा कि अगर वह शहर से भाग गया तो अनिल उसे पकड़ नहीं पाएगा। रेलवे स्टेशन पहुंचे हरि सिंह, लखनऊ एक्सप्रेस जाने वाली थी.

अचानक अच्छी आत्मा ने उसे बुलाया। भीतर की आवाज ने उसे अनिल के विश्वास के साथ विश्वासघात न करने के लिए कहा। ट्रेन चल रही थी लेकिन हरि ने उसे पकड़ने की हिम्मत नहीं की। उसे अनिल का मासूम चेहरा याद आ रहा था। हरि सिंह ने सोचा कि अनिल उसके बारे में क्या सोचेगा।

अनिल को पैसे की चिंता नहीं होगी लेकिन उसे बुरा लग सकता है कि एक आदमी ने उसका विश्वास तोड़ा है। हरि सिंह के मन में द्वन्द्व चल रहा था। वह अनिल का विश्वास नहीं खोना चाहता था क्योंकि वह जानता था कि अनिल एक साधारण व्यक्ति है।

इसके अलावा अनिल उसे सिखा रहा था कि कैसे लिखना और संख्याएँ जोड़ना जो उसका जीवन बदल सकता है। वह समाज में एक सम्मानित व्यक्ति बन सकता है।

वह रेलवे स्टेशन से चला गया। वह मैदान में आया और बेंच पर बैठ गया। तभी तेज बारिश शुरू हो गई। नवंबर का महीना था। सर्द हवा चलने लगी। वह और अधिक असहज महसूस करता था क्योंकि उसने एक निर्दोष व्यक्ति को धोखा दिया था।

उसकी कमीज और पजामा उसके शरीर से चिपक गया क्योंकि बारिश के कारण वह भीग गया था।

फिर वह खुद को बारिश से बचाने के लिए घंटाघर गया। वह वहीं टावर के नीचे बैठ गया। अचानक उसे अपने नोट्स याद आ गए। उसने उसकी तलाशी ली तो पाया कि सारे नोट गीले थे। वह फिर से रेंगने लगा और चुपके से गद्दे के नीचे पैसे वापस रख दिए।

अगले दिन अनिल उठा, उसने हरि और स्वयं के लिए चाय बनाई। उसने हरि को पचास रुपये का नोट दिया और उससे कहा कि अब उसे नियमित रूप से भुगतान किया जाएगा। हरि ने नोट लिया और पाया कि वह अभी भी गीला था। वह समझ गया कि अनिल को बीती रात के एपिसोड के बारे में पता था।

Anil was a young writer. He was leading his life very carelessly. He was writing for magazines and earning money to run his life. One day Anil was watching a wrestling match. Hari knew very well how to make friends with unknown people. He used an old formula to flatter the person. Hari stayed with Anil.

Anil promised her that he would teach her to write and add numbers. He also taught her to cook delicious food. Dainik Hari Singh went to buy daily necessities and made a profit of Re 1 per day. Anil knew this but had no objection. Both were living happily together.

A month passed, Hari Singh did not do his business. One day he saw that Anil had brought a bundle of notes. He looked to put them under the mattress. As soon as Hari saw the bundle of notes, his evil spirit awakened in his mind and he decided to rob Anil that night. After eating food, Anil slept peacefully.

Hari could not sleep, he woke up. He crawled to the bed and put his hand under the mattress. He found the notes and ran on the road. Hari Singh decided that he would go straight to the railway station and catch the Lucknow Express.

He thought that if he ran away from the city, Anil would not be able to catch him. Hari Singh reached the railway station, was about to leave for Lucknow Express.

Suddenly a good spirit called to him. The inner voice tells her not to betray Anil's trust. The train was moving but Hari did not dare to catch it. He was remembering the innocent face of Anil. Hari Singh wondered what Anil would think of her.

Anil will not be worried about money but he may feel bad that a man has broken his trust. There was a conflict going on in Hari Singh's mind. He did not want to lose Anil's trust as he knew that Anil was an ordinary person.

Also Anil was teaching her how to write and add numbers which could change her life. He can become a respected person in the society.

He left the railway station. He came to the ground and sat on the bench. Then it started raining heavily. It was the month of November. Cold wind started blowing. He felt more uncomfortable because he had betrayed an innocent person.

His shirt and pajamas stuck to his body as he got wet due to rain.

Then he went to the clock tower to save himself from the rain. He sat there under the tower. Suddenly he remembered his notes. He searched it and found that all the notes were wet. He crawled again and secretly put the money back under the mattress.

The next day Anil woke up, made tea for Hari and himself. He gave a fifty rupee note to Hari and told him that now he would be paid regularly. Hari took note and found that it was still wet. He understood that Anil knew about last night's episode.
