He worked very hard and mastered playing on the xylophone. At the age of 16, she toured the UK, auditioned for the Royal Academy of Music and scored the highest score in the history of the Academy.
She gradually moved from orchestral work to solo performances. He had mastered about 1000 percussion instruments. She won many awards but remained humble as ever. Apart from his regular concerts, he also gave concerts to help deaf children. She became a source of inspiration for people with disabilities. He showed them that nothing is impossible for one who has the will to do it and works hard for it.
Part II: Shehnai of Bismillah Khan
Shehnai Summary of Bismillah Khan:
This chapter throws light on the origin of shehnai and the life of the greatest shehnai player of all time - Bismillah Khan. Winner of Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, his dedication to music and his love for India.
'Pungi' is a musical instrument, which was banned by Emperor Aurangzeb because of its sharp and unpleasant sound. In fact, it was regarded more as a noise maker rather than a musical instrument. It was modified and perfected by a barber who belonged to a family of professional musicians. He played it in the king's chamber. Its voice was so much appreciated by the emperor that it was made a part of the Naubat. Since it was first played by a barber in the Shah's chamber, it came to be known as Shehnai.
Traditionally, it was played in temples and also on every auspicious domestic occasion. Its sound was considered auspicious. But it was considered an unfinished musical instrument, not capable of forming independent melody. But Bismillah Khan broke this myth.
Bismillah belongs to the Banaras Gharana. He was born on 21 March 1916 in Dumraon, Bihar. At the age of five, he used to go to the Bihariji temple and sing Bhojpuri 'Chaita' there. For his melodious singing he used to earn a big laddu from the local Bhojpuri king. At the age of 6, he moved to Banaras. There, under the guidance and training of his maternal uncle Ali Bux, he began to learn the nuances of shehnai. He used to spend most of his time practicing on the banks of the river Ganges.
The themes of his music were greatly influenced by the sound of the flowing waters of the Ganges. He received the Best Artist Award at the All India Music Conference in Allahabad in 1930. He was presented with national awards like Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.
In 2001, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award. He was invited to play the shehnai from the ramparts of the Red Fort in 1947, becoming the first to greet Indian independent India with his shehnai. He also won many international awards. He became the first Indian in the United States to perform at Lincoln Central Hall, an auditorium in Tehran named after him, Tahar Masjid Ustad Bismillah Khan.
Bismillah was very fond of Banaras and Dumraon. He took the U.S.A. of one of his students. He declined the offer to settle in AD, as he was unwilling to stay away from Banaras and its holy river Ganges for a long time. He also ventured into the film world. He composed his music for two films. His composition 'Dil Ka Khiladi Hai Tut Gaya' for the film 'Goonj Uthi Shehnai' was a chartbuster. But he could not connect himself with the artificial glamor of the film world. For him music was his soul, his life.
