on 27 October 1999. Prashant went to meet a friend who lived in Ersama. This place was eighteen kilometers away from his village. A super cyclone came in the evening. The wind blew fiercely against the houses. It was raining heavily and continuously. Homes and people have been washed away by the flood. His friend's house was made of bricks and cement. It was strong enough to survive the wind gusts up to 350 kmph. But an uprooted tree fell on their house and damaged some part of its roof and walls.

Prashant and his friend's family took shelter on the terrace to avoid the rising water in the house. For the next two days, Prashant was sitting on the terrace with his friend's family. They froze in the cold and rain. Early in the morning Prashant witnessed the devastation caused by the cyclone. There was a sheet of water everywhere. Only the paans of pucca houses were visible. All other houses were washed away.

Even big trees had fallen. Swollen carcasses of animals and humans were floating everywhere. The devastation caused by the cyclone and sea waves continued for the next thirty-six hours. After two days the rain stopped and the rain water slowly started receding. Prashant was recently worried about his family. He took a long stick and set out on a long and difficult journey of eighteen kilometers to his village.

There was water everywhere. He had to use his stick to trace the road. At times it was waist deep and progress was slow. Sometimes he would lose the road and had to swim. After walking some distance he found two friends of his uncle. They decided to move in together. They had to push away many human bodies floating on the water. There were also carcasses of dogs, goats and cattle.

Every village he passed by, he could hardly see a house standing. He was afraid that his family might get saved from the cyclone. Finally he reached his village Kalikuda. His heart sank. He had gone home. His family was nowhere. Prashant had gone to the Red Cross shelter to look for his family. Fortunately, his family was alive. They were very happy to see Prashant.

He came to know that eighty-six people had lost their lives in his village and all ninety-six houses were washed away. The cyclone has caused a lot of damage in Prashant's village and surrounding areas. Prashant decided to help his family and others. He formed a group of youth. He pressurized the local trader to give rice to the hungry villagers. They lit a fire and cooked the rice, although it was rotting.

His next step was to clear the place of dirt, grime, urine and floating corpses. He cared for the wounds and fractures of many who were injured. On the fifth day a military helicopter dropped food. But it didn't return. Prashant and others devised a plan to get the helicopters' attention. He asked the children to lie down on their stomachs with empty utensils. This was done to let the helicopters know that they were hungry.

The plan worked and helicopters started dropping food regularly, Prashant brought orphans and built shelters for them. He asked the woman to take care of him. But they found that women and children were sinking deeper into their misery. A part of the food for work program was started by an NGO. Prashant persuades him to join it.

He enlisted other volunteers to help widows start their lives again. Orphaned children were resettled in their own community. Although six months have passed since the cyclone's massive devastation, village widows and orphaned children seek Prashant in their hour of grief and need.
