The author's grandfather loved collecting animals and had a zoo in his house. Once he bought a monkey named Toto from a tonga driver for five rupees. Toto was kept a secret because Grandma didn't like animals. Toto was very mischievous. When the writer and his grandfather hide Toto in a cupboard and tie him to a hook, he breaks the hook and creates havoc in the room. The next day when he was kept in the servants' room with the other animals, he did not let them sleep the whole night.

Since Dada had to go to Saharanpur for work, he decided to take the monkey with him. She put Toto in a sturdy bag made of canvas and closed the zip tightly so that Toto could not escape. Toto made an unsuccessful attempt to get out of the bag, causing him to jump from behind and roll over.

This aroused curiosity among fellow passengers at the railway station. When Dada was getting his ticket checked at Saharanpur railway station, Toto peeped through the bag and smiled at the ticket collector.

When Toto was accepted by Grandma, she was given a place in the stables alongside the donkey - Nana. Toto didn't even meet Nana. In the winter season, Toto used to enjoy bathing in hot water.

One day, after he jumped into a kettle of boiling water, he nearly boiled himself, One afternoon, Toto ate a family meal of casserole. He threw the empty plate from the tree and it broke into many pieces. Toto's mischief grew day by day and Grandpa realized that they could not keep him at home. In the end, he found the same tonga driver and sold it back to Toto for three rupees.

इससे रेलवे स्टेशन पर साथी यात्रियों में उत्सुकता जगी। सहारनपुर रेलवे स्टेशन पर जब दादा अपना टिकट चेक करवा रहे थे तो टोटो ने बैग में से झाँका और टिकट कलेक्टर को देखकर मुस्कुरा दिया।

जैसे ही टिकट लेनेवाले ने घोषणा की कि यह कुत्ता है, दादाजी को तीन रुपये में टिकट खरीदना पड़ा, जिससे उनकी झुंझलाहट काफी बढ़ गई। जब टोटो को दादी ने स्वीकार किया, तो उसे गधे के साथ-साथ अस्तबल में जगह दी गई - नाना। टोटो को नाना से भी नहीं मिला। सर्दी के मौसम में टोटो को गर्म पानी से नहाने में मजा आता था।

एक दिन, जब वह उबलते पानी की केतली में कूद गया, तो उसने लगभग खुद को उबाल लिया, एक दोपहर, टोटो ने पुलाव का पारिवारिक भोजन खाया। उसने पेड़ से खाली थाली फेंकी और उसके कई टुकड़े हो गए। टोटो की शरारतें दिन पर दिन बढ़ती गईं और दादाजी को एहसास हुआ कि वे उसे घर पर नहीं रख सकते। अंत में, उसे वही तांगा चालक मिल गया और उसने टोटो को तीन रुपये में वापस बेच दिया।
